The crime occurred on November 22, 2013, when Arms, wearing a mask and gloves, robbed the Cartersville Jewelry Exchange with a silver handgun, stealing over $50,000 in jewelry. He fled in a stolen Ford F-150, later linked to the crime through advanced DNA technology. The trial, held in December 2023, included testimony from 12 witnesses and 80 exhibits. The prosecution highlighted Arms' recidivist history, leading to the maximum sentence. Victims expressed ongoing trauma, and Arms is prohibited from contacting them.
STORY 2: Canton Woman Convicted of Leaving Puppies to Die Sentenced
Amber Higdon, 31, of Canton, has been sentenced to 10 years, with two years in confinement, after pleading guilty to seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. The charges arose from a July 27, 2023 incident where Higdon abandoned seven puppies in a pink tote on the side of the road, leading to their deaths from heat exposure. The puppies, left without food, water, or shelter, died of pulmonary edema, hemorrhage, and cardiac arrest. Higdon admitted to the act, expecting someone else to find the puppies. The court imposed various conditions, including prohibiting her from owning or contacting animals during probation. Co-defendant Ashley Vernon received five years of probation for her role.

STORY 6: Gas Station and Retail Store Coming to Southeast Cherokee
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the zoning change for a gas station and retail store on Arnold Mill Road. The decision rezones approximately 4.085 acres from office and institutional to general commercial, with a variance for grading within the undisturbed buffer. The approval passed 4-1, with Chair Harry Johnston opposing, citing concerns about the alignment with the county’s land use plan and preference for neighborhood commercial zoning. Commissioner Weatherby supported the change, citing historical zoning issues. Conditions include operating hours from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., restricted trash pickup, and replanting the buffer with dense vegetation. The development will include a 6,400 square-foot convenience store with gas pumps and a 2,000 square-foot retail building.
STORY 7: Vincent Named Week 5 Player of the Week
Sam Vincent of River Ridge has been named Cherokee County Player of the Week after an impressive performance in a 45-3 victory over Pope. Vincent excelled both offensively and defensively, scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass and securing two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 20-yard touchdown. His contributions helped the Knights hold Pope to just three points and extend their winning streak to four games, during which they have consistently scored over 40 points. With River Ridge averaging 35.4 points per game, they are enjoying one of the best offensive stretches in program history as they prepare to face Sequoyah after the fall break.

STORY 1: Canton Approves New Zoning Map
The city of Canton has adopted a new zoning map, aimed at simplifying the zoning classifications following unanimous approval by the City Council on September 12. The update reflects changes made in April, which included the removal of several zoning categories to streamline the process. In August, city staff presented the map, followed by a public hearing on August 15 to gather resident feedback. Property owners were notified and given the chance to request changes; ten of these requests were incorporated into the final map. Key zoning districts now include Central Business District, General Commercial, Light Industrial, and various residential and mixed-use categories. The map also designates special use zones for governmental and quasi-governmental facilities. This effort was led by Community Development Director Kevin Turner and his team, who worked closely with residents to address concerns.
STORY 2: Canton Applying for Grant for Pedestrian Bridge
The Canton City Council has approved a resolution to apply for a Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program Grant for the $6.1 million River Mill Pedestrian Bridge project, which aims to connect The Mill on Etowah to the Etowah trail network. The project includes a pedestrian bridge, put-in/take-out area for kayaking, and a paved trail, with a projected budget of $6,165,938.40. Funding will come from the grant, Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax, and impact fees. The bridge, designed with a concrete deck and prefab steel truss, is expected to start construction in mid to late 2025 and have a lifespan of over 75 years. The City also awarded a contract for the trail design to integrate with the bridge, with construction aligning for 2025.
STORY 3: Reinhardt Falters on the Road
Reinhardt University's football team faced a tough defeat against Southeastern, losing 28-10 during a non-conference game in Lakeland, Florida. The Eagles, now 1-2, initially took the lead but failed to score in the second half due to costly special teams errors. The game was part of a challenging road trip, and despite a strong start, Reinhardt's mistakes, including a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, proved detrimental. Quarterback Stephin Craig completed 14 of 32 passes for 132 yards, with the team struggling in execution. The Eagles will host Cumberlands next Saturday at Ken White Field before continuing their schedule against Georgetown and Pikeville. Coach James Miller expressed frustration but emphasized the need to improve and prepare for upcoming challenges.

STORY 4: Public Hearing Set for Cherokee's Proposed $415M Budget
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is set to hold a public hearing today to gather resident input on the proposed $415.7 million budget for fiscal year 2025. The budget presentation will start at 6 p.m. at Cherokee Hall, Cherokee County Conference Center, followed by the hearing. The proposed budget allocates 54.1% to public safety, 20.5% to judicial services, and 15.3% to general administration, among other areas. Commissioners will review the budget for adoption during their regular meeting on October 1. Residents can view the budget details online for further information.
STORY 5: Burt Jones Cleared of Criminal Intent Following 2020 Presidential Election
Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has been exonerated by the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia after an investigation into his role as an alternate elector following the 2020 presidential election. Jones, then a Republican state senator, was part of a group that voted to cast Georgia's electoral votes for Donald Trump despite Joe Biden's victory in the state. The investigation, led by Pete Skandalakis after Fulton County DA Fani Willis was disqualified due to a conflict of interest, found no criminal intent in Jones' actions. The findings indicated that Jones acted on legal advice to preserve potential legal remedies for Trump amid election disputes. Despite other GOP electors facing indictments, no charges were brought against Jones, who used the same defense during his 2022 campaign for lieutenant governor.

Martin, the group will perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association’s In-Service Conference in Athens on January 31, 2024, and at the Georgia American Choral Directors Association Fall Conference in October at Kennesaw State University. Fewer than a dozen groups statewide are chosen for the GMEA evening concerts. The group includes 35 members, and both events will feature music educators from across Georgia. Dean Rusk Middle School’s Chorus will also perform at the ACDA event.
STORY 5: Fulton judge tosses three counts in Trump’s election interference case
A Fulton County Superior Court judge has dismissed three counts in District Attorney Fani Willis’ election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The dismissed counts involved accusations of filing false documents in federal court, which Judge Scott McAfee ruled the state does not have jurisdiction to prosecute. The remaining charges, related to a scheme to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, remain intact. This ruling leaves five of the original 13 counts against Trump. The case has been on hold since June due to concerns about Willis’ impartiality, which were addressed after the special prosecutor she hired resigned in April.

STORY 6: Cherokee County Students Named National Merit Semifinalists
Four Cherokee County School District high school seniors—Maja Brooker, Kevin Duncan, and Alfred Tang from River Ridge High School, and Robert Raymer from Sequoyah High School—have been named 2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. This honor, given to less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, is based on exceptional PSAT scores. These students will be recognized at the Cherokee County School Board meeting on October 17. To advance, they must complete an application detailing their achievements and pass additional requirements. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will select 15,000 finalists to compete for 7,500 scholarships worth around $30 million.
STORY 7: West, De la Cruz tossed from Georgia presidential ballot
Two Fulton County judges have disqualified independent Cornel West and socialist Claudia De la Cruz from Georgia’s presidential ballot due to improperly filed nominating petitions. Despite the disqualification, their names will still appear on the November 5 ballot because of timing issues. This decision reduces the list of qualified candidates in Georgia to four: Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, Libertarian Chase Oliver, and Green Party’s Jill Stein. The Democratic Party of Georgia had appealed the earlier decision by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, concerned that West and De la Cruz could affect votes for Harris.

The request includes variances for reduced parking, and the elimination of berms, fencing, and sidewalks. The proposed plan also includes restrictions on various business types. The Cherokee County Planning Commission has recommended denial due to concerns about road access and community opposition, including a petition from a nearby subdivision.
STORY 2: Developer Leasing Vacant Buildings near Canton for Commercial Use
Cherokee County has approved the rezoning of 0.29 acres at 3350 Marietta Highway from single-family residential to general commercial. This change allows for the leasing of two vacant buildings—previously the Biskit Barn restaurant and another commercial space—for new businesses. The Board of Commissioners also approved several variances, including reduced setbacks and buffer requirements, to bring the existing structures into compliance with county codes. The property, which includes a drive-thru parking lot, is set to be utilized for commercial purposes, as confirmed by the county documents.
STORY 3: Drive-Thru Flu Shots Available in Woodstock Oct. 1
