  • Gregg Majewski on The Making IT Podcast: Leading with Franchisees First

In his appearance on the Making It Podcast with host Jon Davids, Gregg Majewski, CEO of Craveworthy Brands and former key player in Jimmy John’s growth, shared insights into his franchise philosophy, Craveworthy's mission, and what it takes to be a successful partner.

    Franchisees Come First

Majewski firmly believes that franchisees’ success is the foundation of a thriving brand. He explained that while many businesses focus on the bottom line, his approach is to ensure franchisees have the tools to succeed.

“The best franchisors constantly remind themselves that we have to make sure every decision we make helps their bottom line. My franchisees are more important to me than my bottom line," Majewski said, adding that his personal and professional success is intrinsically tied to theirs.

    Building Craveworthy Brands

Drawing from his experience with Jimmy John’s, Majewski founded Craveworthy Brands with the goal of helping smaller, emerging restaurant brands scale up. He sees this as a way to give back to the industry and create new opportunities. Majewski's passion is to help smaller brands grow before larger companies take over.

"I wanted to give emerging brands the opportunity I had at Jimmy John’s. I’m really, really good at building brands up to that 300-unit number," he shared.

    Passion Over Experience

When it comes to partnering with franchisees, Majewski values passion and an entrepreneurial spirit above all.

"I don't need the experience of multi-unit guys to run my brands. I need somebody who believes and is willing to bet on themselves," Majewski explained.

For him, successful franchisees are those who work tirelessly and have a hunger for growth, traits that are essential for any budding business.

In this insightful episode, Majewski highlighted the importance of supporting franchisees, fostering emerging brands, and valuing passion in business. His dedication to building a successful, people-first franchise ecosystem sets Craveworthy Brands apart in a competitive industry.

    ABOUT JON DAVIDS

According to Jon Davids, he made $300K in college by mastering one key skill: hijacking demand on the internet, a talent that would change his life. It all started in 2004 when he built an online magazine and monetized it through digital ads. Running it while still a student, he sold the magazine to a large publisher in 2009. By 2011, Jon discovered the power of YouTube influencers and leveraged the platform to drive millions in revenue for brands. That was just the beginning. In 2015, he founded Influicity, an influencer marketing agency. Though the early days were tough, the company eventually found its footing, landing major clients like Toyota, Walmart, and Bank of America. By 2019, Influicity expanded its services to include podcasts, social media, and content marketing, now serving brands in seven countries. A passionate entrepreneur, Jon shares his insights with an audience of 2 million people each month.

  • Big Chicken, partnering with Shaquille O'Neal and winning daily with CEO Josh Halpern

On the Room for Seconds podcast with Gregg Majewski, Josh Halpern, CEO of Big Chicken, shared his strategic vision for ensuring success at every level of the franchise. Recorded live in Las Vegas at the annual Go Big! Conference hosted by Big Chicken, Josh shares his “four wins a day” philosophy, Shaquille O’Neal’s authenticity, and a maniacal focus on franchisee financials.

Dive into the latest episode of Room for Seconds and be sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts!

    Takeaways:

    1. Four Wins a Day - For Josh Halpern, Big Chicken franchises have to win. It’s a must. Their mission is to have four wins every day for each franchise. The guests, suppliers, franchisees, and Big Chicken all need daily wins for Halpern and company to remain atop the industry.
    2. Shaquille O’Neal’s Authenticity - Shaquille O’Neal is Big Chicken’s largest stakeholder, but his humility is what makes Josh Halpern enjoy working with him. From random FaceTime calls to being known as family by Shaq’s mom, Lucille, Halpern sings the praises of O’Neal as a business partner.
    3. A Maniacal Focus on Franchisees Unit Level Economics - To fight inflation, Josh Halpern believes that added value supersedes deep discounts, which would go against Big Chicken’s focus on their franchisee's economics at the unit level.

On the latest episode of the Room for Second podcast, hosted by Gregg Majewski, Juicer CEO and Co-Founder Ashwin Kamlani offered an insightful look into how his company is transforming the restaurant industry through data-driven pricing solutions. Responding to Consumer Demand for Value - As the economy changes, customers have begun to demand more. For Ashwin Kamlani, that increased demand creates opportunities for innovation and a reinvigoration of the industry customer base.

Smart Spending & Competitive Intelligence - In a post pandemic world, Ashwin Kamlani believes it is imperative for restaurant businesses to spend their money wisely. For Kamlani, the easiest way to ensure this happens is to only purchase technology with a tangible return on investment that can be tracked.

    About Ashwin Kamlani

Ashwin Kamlani serves as the Co-Founder and CEO of JUICER, leading a company dedicated to helping the restaurant industry navigate the complexities of e-commerce and third-party distribution. His career has been a preparation for this pivotal role. Kamlani began his journey in the late 90s, gaining valuable experience in technology at Accenture and PwC. However, his true passion for hospitality emerged during his time at the Cornell Hotel School, which he attended in the wake of the 9-11 attacks. This passion led him to a career with Melia Hotels & Resorts, where he started as an unpaid intern and worked his way up to become the Global VP of E-commerce, Loyalty & Distribution.

During his tenure at Melia, Kamlani mastered the art of driving e-commerce revenue by balancing partnerships with third-party intermediaries and enhancing direct online sales through digital marketing, promotions, and strategic alliances. Under his leadership, online revenues at Melia grew to over 250 million euros. In 2010, Kamlani founded his own business to help other hotel companies achieve similar success, focusing on strengthening direct e-commerce operations and reducing reliance on third parties. This venture was acquired by a major loyalty firm in 2016. Recognizing that the restaurant industry was on the brink of a similar transformation, Kamlani and his co-founders launched JUICER five years later. As a leader, he is committed to building companies based on transparency and trust, and he shares his journey, including successes, struggles, and lessons learned, on LinkedIn.

  • How to Find More Local Customers with Gregg Majewski

Gregg Majewski, CEO of Craveworthy Brands, shares strategies for local growth and customer loyalty in the restaurant industry. In this discussion with Justin Ulrich of Evocalize on The Local Marketing Lab podcast, Gregg touches on topics such as sampling products as a way to win more customers and the power of smartphone storytelling when growing your brand.

Dive into this insightful conversation to discover some of the best ways to help your restaurant attract and retain more loyal customers.

    Takeaways:

Give out samples, win more customers - Sampling your food to potential customers, even though it may involve a cost, can have a significant impact on growing your business. By giving away samples and engaging with local businesses and communities through initiatives like office deliveries and local events, you can attract more customers and build a loyal base.

Define (and execute) your value prop - Customers have never had more choices of where to eat than they do today. This has made it not only difficult to answer the question of “what should we have for dinner tonight”, but it has also made it more challenging for businesses to stand apart.

Using Smartphone Storytelling as an Investment in Your Brand - One of the most powerful tools for telling your brand story is in your pocket every day. Using your smartphone as a tool to capture real, authentic stories about your brand is what consumers today want to see.

    About Local Marketing Lab

Consistency in Training and Culture - With so many franchises and locations across the country, consistency can be difficult to maintain. Craveworthy Brands, however, achieves consistency by pouring back into the stores, calibrating training, and holding managers accountable.

    Takeaways:

Simplicity in Leadership [8:27 - 8:51] - Gregg Majewski has the leader over a large number of other leaders. For him, a simplified approach to leading with heart and by the Golden Rule has proven to be most effective.

Three Legged Stool in Restaurants - There are pillars of successful business that Gregg Majewski believes need to occur simultaneously. Much like a stool, if one leg of that business is lacking, the business cannot stand.

Learning from Dave Thomas - Gregg Majewski has had the opportunity to be mentored by some of the greats in the restaurant industry, such as Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s, who shared with him the importance of giving back to the industry.

    ABOUT JOSH KOPEL

Josh Kopel is a seasoned restaurateur, tech pioneer, and environmental advocate from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. With a family background in bootlegging and retail, Kopel was naturally inclined toward the hospitality industry. Over his 20+ year career, he has managed diverse venues, from the rustic Alligator Bayou Bar to trendy Hollywood nightclubs. In 2010, Kopel went independent, opening Five0Four, a New Orleans-inspired bar on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. He later launched the Michelin-rated fine dining concept Preux & Proper and South City Fried Chicken, which was recognized as the best fried chicken in Los Angeles by LA Weekly. Despite his success, Kopel identified fundamental issues within the industry and decided to address them head-on.

In 2018, Kopel founded FLO Hospitality Solutions to leverage technology in enhancing customer service. His first product, FLO, launched in 2019, provides a comprehensive communication solution for restaurants, saving labor hours and boosting profits. During the 2020 pandemic, Kopel created FULL COMP, a podcast, blog, and video series aimed at helping restaurateurs navigate challenges by drawing on insights from industry thought leaders. In 2021, he developed the Restaurant Scaling System, a program designed to help restaurant owners scale their businesses efficiently. Additionally, Kopel holds influential positions, including board seats on the Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council and the California Restaurant Association, and co-founded Friends of Runyon Canyon, a non-profit dedicated to protecting local Los Angeles park areas.
