Chick Lit Book Club Podcast

Its Hispanic Heritage Month here on the podcast and we are celebrating by taking a trip back in time to Restored Republic era Mexico to discuss the last installment of the Luna Sisters series, Gabriella and His Grace by Liana de La Rosa. It’s been a while since we’ve been on the Tardis traveling back in time but we wanted to visit this period of history with three formidable sisters doing the hard work to improve women’s lives and health.

Give us female hockey players and reformed rakes all day long, please and thank you. We also wax rhapsodic about Dolly Parton because we will always love her.

To round out comfort reads month, we read Veronica’s pick: The Deal by Elle Kennedy. Thanks to Prime’s hit series Off Campus, we’re seeing a well-deserved resurgence of this book, and we’re totally stoked to talk about it. Hockey star Garrett Graham has a problem: he’s failing Ethics, which was supposed to be an easy class to round out his course load. Hannah Wells is sailing through class, and when Garrett begs her to tutor him, she shoots him down real fast. But when he finds out she has a crush on the star quarterback, he proposes a deal: he’ll help her land her crush via classic fake dating if she tutors him. One thing leads to another, and Hannah proposes her own deal. And suddenly, the fake-dating situation doesn’t feel so fake anymore.

We pulled an audible and chose to do comfort reads for the month of August. Rae chose The Opposite of You by Rachel Higginson, an enemies-to-lovers story about two chefs competing (or not) from across a parking lot. Vera has recently opened a food truck, aptly named Foodie, while trying to get back on her feet following a horrible breakup. Killian is the executive chef at swanky upscale restaurant, Lilou, right across the street. Can they put down the knives and call a truce?

We’ve headed out west for this episode, covering West of Forever by Corinne Michaels. Michaels is a new-to-us author, even though she’s been on our radar for years and is quite prolific. This is a Hatfields-McCoys/Romeo and Juliet situation with two rival ranching families. The only thing is, there’s a heck of a lot of chemistry between the only sister in a family of four, Lark Gatlin, and single dad/widower Tristan Stone. And well…what the families don’t know won’t hurt them. Or do the families know?

We’re celebrating the World Cup *one more time* with Hard to Hold by K. Bromberg. When Liverpool star Rush McKenzie becomes embroiled in scandal, his agent advises him to retreat to L.A. while the heat dies down. Lennox Kincaid is fresh off a humiliating encounter at a professional conference and is running from her own demons. It’s only fitting that these two run smack dab into each other. What’s the harm in having some temporary fun? Certainly not the fact that they’re working together.

While ex best friends Jen and Amy reconnect after twenty years apart, will they let their current positions of managing their respective country’s women's futbol clubs get in the way of their happily ever after?

Note: Please excuse Veronica’s audio quality–she didn’t realize the wrong microphone was selected. Life is hard.

We’re kicking off Pride Month with a sapphic soccer (football, for everyone outside the U.S.) romance: Rowin’s Second Half by K.R. Lockling. Rowin is a soccer star and River is fresh off a breakup. The meet cute? River being embarrassed on the jumbotron at one of Rowin’s games. We have…a lot to say.

To conclude Mariana May, we read her latest tome, The Things We Water. Zapata’s longest book by far dives into romantasy/paranormal territory with magical beings, gods, and old country lore. We follow Nina as she travels to a compound where magical beings can live safely. Run by her friend’s (hot, werewolf) cousin, she finds she needs to follow a very specific set of rules in order to stay. It shouldn’t be any trouble finding someone to marry. Right?

We’re hanging around the ice arena a little longer with a figure skating romance from Slow Burn Queen, Mariana Zapata: From Lukov with Love. This one is an enemies-to-lovers, two-most-stubborn-people-on-the-planet situation. He calls her Meatball. She calls him Satan. Even after they fall in love, they’re still telling each other they suck.
