Our Youth Reporters talk about why it is important to continue reporting during the COVID-19 outbreak, what issues are important for young people during a pandemic like this and what role radio plays in helping to stop the spreading of the virus.

Matlala Ramaesela is a matric student whose studies came to a halt during lockdown. Online classes were set up, but then discontinued because they didn’t work for everyone. This brought up questions around whether Matlala would be able to complete her final year of high school. Eventually she took things into her own hands and created a program that would allow her to continue with her studies, while also giving her a sense of direction and purpose. Returning to school has been challenging. The health precautions are especially demanding, but COVID-19 has created a new normal which requires everyone to remain open to uncertainty and change in order to survive.

Maureen Richards reflects on how challenging it was when schools and churches were closed for lockdown. Maureen’s family has in the past run a church from their own home, where they enjoyed seeing their community come together to share love for their faith and each other. In line with the COVID-19 restrictions, Maureen and her family continue their praise and worship, but just as a family. This is what gives them hope during these tough times.
