Niccolò Machiavelli's The Art of War—a comprehensive military treatise on warfare, tactics, and the role of the citizen-soldier. The only book Machiavelli published during his lifetime, presenting strategic wisdom through dialogue. Translated by Henry Neville, narrated by Clive Catterall with full subtitles and background music.
📖 About the Work
The Art of War (1521) was the only book Machiavelli published during his lifetime and one he considered among his finest achievements. Structured as dialogues between the fictional military leader Lord Fabrizio Colonna and others in Florence's Orti Oricellari gardens, the work develops themes from The Prince and Discourses. Machiavelli explores military organization, tactics, the dangers of standing armies, limited warfare as an extension of politics, and psychological warfare. His central aim: "To honor and reward virtue, not to have contempt for poverty, to esteem military discipline, to constrain citizens to love one another, to live without factions, to esteem less the private than the public good." This Henry Neville translation (1675) was published when The Art of War remained a practical military manual and standard text for three hundred years.
✍️ About Niccolò Machiavelli
Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527) was an Italian Renaissance political philosopher, historian, and diplomat best known for The Prince. His works on politics, warfare, and statecraft profoundly influenced Western political thought. Though The Prince made him infamous for advocating pragmatic (sometimes ruthless) political action, The Art of War reveals his broader vision of civic virtue, military discipline, and republican values.
