This is a very famous shloka that we chant while lighting the lamp. In this satsang, we discuss the deeper aspect of this shloka along with two other shlokas. There are 5 lamps we must light within and that will enable the Lord to light the 6th Lamp and liberate us. Through these 6 lamps we also cover Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Jnana Yoga sadhanas.

What is the importance of Knowledge in our lives? We desire as per our knowledge and act as per our desires. The intellect which is non-discriminative, mind which is not focussed and actions which are impure, lead a person to bondage and one does not attain the Supreme. One who has a discriminative intellect, integrated mind and purity in actions, attains the Supreme State of Consciousness.

Atma identified with the Body, Mind & Intellect is the charioteer. The body is the chariot. It has to be dynamic. Desire and enthusiasm are needed in life to act and achieve. Charioteer is the intellect. There are 5 duties of a charioteer. The mind is the reins and the senses are the horses. What is the tuning between the Intellect, Mind & Senses? Sense objects are the path on which the horses tread. Identified with these the Infinite Atma becomes the finite doer and enjoyer. One whose intellect is not discriminative and whose mind is not focussed, the senses of that person will be wild and irredeemable.

Valli 3 begins with the description of Jiva and Ishwara being in our heart, enjoying the results of the action. The knowers of Brahman and ritualists both agree on this. But in them, the Jiva is the doer and enjoyer. Ishwara is not. The purpose of this description is to elaborate on the path of vidya and avidya and the results that one will attain through this path. This sets the background to elaborate on the chariot analogy which is the main theme of this valli.
