Nature of Self as Unborn, Unchanging, Imperishable, Pure Intelligence, beyond cause and effect, most ancient is discussed here along with the verse which says that Self is not the killer or the killed. One who thinks of the Self as either, does not know its true nature. This verse is misquoted and not understood well. The verse talks mainly about non-doership of the Self.

He wants that Self which is beyond Duties & non-performance, virtues and vices, beyond past & future. Yamaraj starts by indicating the Self through OM.

Yamraj explains about his own choices made earlier to attain this position and how he knew that the Permanent is not attained by the temporary and still he chose the rituals to get this position of Yama. Eventually he did realise the Truth. He also praises the vairagya of Nachiketa and how he has rejected the enjoyments of this world as well as of the Brahmaloka to seek exclusively the Self. Why is the Self difficult to realise? How to realise the Self? What is the result of such realisation? These are covered in the 12th Mantra.

What is the role of logic in Self-Realisation? Why is it insufficient to reach the goal? What is required to discover the Self? Yamraj is praising Nachiketa and says that Nachiketa is greater than Yamraj also. How is it so?

Why is it not possible to realise the Self when heard from a person who is not established in the Truth. Why do we say that the higher worlds and lower worlds exist? Why can’t there be only this world? Rare it is to come across the Knowledge of the Self. Rarer is to find a teacher established in it. Rarest is to find a Master who is able to explain it to a student and if the student realises it, its a great wonder.

This Truth is not realised by listening to someone who is not established in it. Except listening to a Self-Realised Master, there is no other method says the Upanishad.
