Talk 75 - Verses 252-254

These verses help the seeker to shift the identity of the Jiva to realizing the true Self. Shankaracharya ji gives examples though the verses, of the dreamer which is falsified when the waker is aware. The seeker by asserting and recognizing the pointers to Brahman quietens the mind to prepare for meditation.

Havihi - the sacred offerings given to gods through the sacred fire while doing the sacrifice ritual Yagya. Lord Shiva is described as havi here because only through havi the gods get energy and Lord Shiva is the almighty God who gives energy to everyone (gods, humans and other creatures). In Bhagavat Geeha Chapter 4 verse 24 it is said -

ब्रम्हार्पणं ब्रम्ह हविर्ब्रम्हाग्नौ ब्रम्हणा हुतम्

ब्रम्हैव तेन गन्तव्यं ब्रम्हकर्मसमाधिना

bramhārpaṇaṃ bramha havir bramhāgnau bramhaṇā hutam bramhaiva tēna gantavyaṃ bramhakarmasamādhinā

Brahman is the ladel, the offering or oblations, the fire, the deity, the performer, the goal.

The cause alone pervades the effect. The Lord alone pervades the whole universe even as the material cause. Everything here is Divine.

A few days ago, it was good to interact with Jacob Kyle, Founder & Director of Embodied Philosophy (EP). We recorded a podcast session together on various topics ranging from Festivals, Deepavali, Vedanta, Lord Shiva etc. Was nice to reach out to a new group of seekers in a different part of the world. Though the listeners are spread across the globe, mainly they are in North America.

EP is a school of interdisciplinary, contemplative education that bridges the gap between historical, text-based scholarship and the embodied practices that arise from contemplative texts and traditions. In this talk, the famous Mahavakya ‘Tat Twam Asi’ from the Upanishads is explained to us to indicate the identity of Jiva and Brahman as one. Shankaracharya ji brings out this distinction through 4 examples to establish the oneness of the essence of Jiva and Ishwara.

Somasooryaagni – lochanaha - One who has the Moon, the Sun and the Fire as His eyes. The name viroopaaksha already covered this. The Lord's eyes are described as three primary light sources. Hence the Lord is always looking at us through the Sun, the Moon and the fire.

The two eyes represent the Sun(intellect) and the Moon(Mind). The third eye stands for the Fire of Knowledge which burns away ignorance. It is with this third eye that the deity of passion(kaamadeva) was burnt. The Lord opens this eye at the time of the dissolution of the Universe.

Talk 72 - Verses 238 -240

This talk continues with the pointers indicative of Brahman for the sadhak, who has recognized that Truth. A realized master is beyond the knower, the knowledge and the known and has spiritually awakened to the Atman. The last verse asserts that this is our true nature which can never be rejected.

These verses further expound on experiential proof that the world is a mere projection of the mind, under delusion in all the three states, waking, dream and deep sleep. All plurality exists due the mind’s superimposition on Brahman which manifests in various names and forms. The last 2 verses introduce 20 pointers indicating the nature of Brahman

Paramaatmaa means the Supreme Self. He resides in everyone and controls each one. There is only One Supreme Self and it is not that many individual souls are there who have got separated from the Supreme and who will merge into the Supreme at realisation. From the relative standpoint it may appear so but from the absolute standpoint this is not so.

Talk 70 : Verses 229-233

All names and forms are only modifications that the Jiva perceives through delusion. Likewise the world as we see it, is of the essence of Brahman, though we are asleep to this Supreme state. The scriptures are a testimony to this irrefutable Truth. This talk also discusses the royal secret of the Bhagawad Gita, Chapter 9 from varying standpoints.
