Talk 57 - Verse 163-166

The first 2 verses of this talk suggest a sadhana practice of negation to falsify the identification with this body and assertion that the body is just an instrument. Applying these learnings through self -effort one can eliminate the root cause of the sorrow which causes the repeated birth and death.

The next 2 verses introduce prana as vital energy which pervades around the body and its functionality enlivened by the atma.

Talk 56 - Verse 160-162

This talk continues the distinction between the atma and anatma using the negation of the 5 koshas and dissolution of this false sense of ‘I’ ness. The verses assert the importance of the student’s effort through the study of scriptures to gain knowledge of the Self.

Talk 55 : Verses 154-160

These verses talk about differentiating between the Atma and the anatma, through the negation of the 5 sheaths or pancha kosha. These koshas cover the Self, by way of false identification. So they can be removed through the process of right thinking, negating what is not and asserting what is. We start with the food sheath or annamaya kosha, which refers to the body which is born, nourished and sustained through food.

Talk 54 : Verses 148-153

These verses explain bondage in action, meaning how bondage is sustained due to ignorance, subjecting the Jiva to the transmigration of birth, disease, decay and death. The ocean of samsara can only be crossed by removing the ignorance and experiencing the Supreme Bliss. The Atma and anatma cannot be separated by wind, fire or any amount of actions, but Self-Knowledge alone.

Talk 53 : Verses 146,147

Vrushaankaha. Vrusha – bull. Anka - sign or symbol. One who has bull as his symbol. Every God has a flag and a symbol on it. Most of the gods have the animal or bird in which they ride as the symbol in their flag. Each animal is an embodiment of a particular quality. Lord Shiva rides the bull and he has the symbol of bull in his flag and hence he is called vrushānka . Lord Vishnu rides a garuda and it is his flag symbol too. Lord Kaartikeya rides a peacock but his flag symbol is a rooster .

शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशो धर्मरूपो वृष स्मृत :

ṡuddhasphaṭikasaṃkāṡō dharmarūpō vṛṣa smṛta :

The bull in pure crystal white in color is the embodiment of dharma ( righteousness ) This shows us that righteousness is the symbol of the lord and we must be righteous to please him .

Flag is the symbol of victory and success. Dharma is the true means of success. Flag also is a symbol of honour and one sacrifices whatever is needed for the honor of the flag.

Talk 52 : Verses 140-145

When the true nature of the Self is veiled due to tamas, the rajasic aspect further projects the not-Self and the agitations of the mind set in. The 6 impurities of the mind assert and the root cause of kama or desires deludes the intellect completely. The sense pleasures have been likened to poison and through the analogy of a seed sprouting into the tree of samsara, the role of vasanas and karma in bondage are explained very well.

According to various Puranas the 5 days have a great spiritual significance and we explore this in the satsang.

Trayodashi one lights lamps for yama and to avoid accidental deaths.

Naraka-Chaturdashi one lights lamps, offers Yama-Tarpan and does Ulka-daan for the ancestors.

Amavasya - one worships Lakshmi Devi in the morning, has entertainment in the afternoon, lights lamps in the evening and drives out Alakshmi after midnight with beating of drums etc.

Pratipada - One celebrates the New Year, does Bali pooja, does daan and also plays game of Dice remembering Lord Shiva & Mother Parvati's game.

Yamadvitiya - One goes to the sister's house in the afternoon and both the brother and sister pray to Lord Yama and then sister feeds the brother.

Upavas, Deep-daan, ulka-daan(crackers & sparkles etc.), pooja, oil-bath etc. are common on all the days.

Let us revive our cultural traditions and ensure that our festivals become very meaningful and help in our evolution.
