Chord Progression Podcast: The Gateway to New Rock and Metal Music

It's the year 2025, and if you look on any social media platform (Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Reddit), you will notice that the world seems to be living in an era of darkness. People are unhappy with the state of the world, depressed at how life is turning out for them, and shut off with a belief that there is nothing better ever coming again. But this music, will make that not be the case.

When we are in the darkness, we have to find some shred of hope to hold on to. It allows us to keep moving when things arent going well, when the world seems dark, because there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That hope, is the most powerful thing in the world. And dark music that finds the smallest shred of hope, is this band's hallmark.

Matic from the Slovenian modern metal band Hei'An joins the Chord Progression Podcast today. The brand new album, Kiss Our Ghosts Goodbye, shines a light on hope in the darkness when it comes out on September 26th. Discover Hei'An and Kiss Our Ghosts Goodbye as we discuss.

- What is the signature sound that makes Hei'an stand out, being music living in the darkness that finds a shred of hope no matter what.

- How Matic used "Kiss Our Ghosts Goodbye" to exorcise the ghosts that hold us back, as he explored his sexuality, relationship with disease, and views on the state of the world.

- The album as a whole, deep diving into a lot of tracks coming out on release day, to get you ready for the album.

At the end of 2024, we brought Ireland's greatest emo band to the podcast to get to know their backstory where no one believed in their music but themselves, and how they continued to thrive by just believing in themselves.

One year later, the duo is ready to release their second album, reflecting on how everyone did not believe in them, and they had to believe in themselves to win. They know it is ok to be sad, but this is about not wallowing in that sadness, and moving forward with your life and goals.

Steph and Paul from Ireland's greatest emo band Greywind rejoin the Chord Progression Podcast with their new album, Severed Heart City, releasing on September 19th. Dive deep with us as we talk about:

- Why Greywind still focuses on fan connection more than anything else, while remembering what it was like to be in their position as fans of their favorite artists.

- The meaning behind the new album Severed Heart City, how it relates to their own story of constantly being broken hearted in music, and why it is ok to be sad but important to heal and move forward.

- An expanding sound on the new album, with "Let's See If You Can Float" and "The Scarecrow" showing opposite ends of the spectrum of their evolved sound.

Making music that connects with fans of whatever genre you are in, isn't easy. Making music that connects with fans of other genres is even harder. Doing so and being able to connect on concert bills where you are the lightest band on the bill, it is nearly impossible. But there has to be something that creates that connection.

And we found it with this band. No, there is no specific gimmick that makes them stand out. No, there is no member that was previously famous from another band trying something new. So what is it? The secret, is the ability to successfully tell stories with music, from the instrumentals, the vocal range, and the lyrics, all working in harmony.

Travis from the post-hardcore band Colorblind is our guest on the Chord Progression Podcast today. With their new EP, Who Sold You This Truth?, released last week, we get you to understand the band even further. Today, we talk about:

- Colorblind going on tour with blessthefall, being the lightest band on the bill, and fitting in perfectly for that role.

- Undsertanding what makes Colorblind a band that can transcend genres with a diverse post-hardcore style, all built off of their songwriting being able to tell stories so perfectly and vividly through sound.

- Writing Who Sold You This Truth, and if there is more to come that just this one EP (hint: the answer is yes).

Kevin's Final Thought; Top Notch Storytelling: (26:37)

Sometimes artists write music to express their own emotions to us in a way that they couldn't do otherwise. Othertimes, they write music as it is the only thing that brings them happiness. The list of reasons goes on and on. But what about writing your music to call yourself out and take accountability?

That is what we found with this artist in the heavy music scene. One that isnt afraid to create music that looks inward at his own faults, take accountability, and learn to move on. Hopefully, we are able to take it that same way and apply it to ourselves. And ask the question, "What would we do if we weren't afraid?"

Joe from the metal band DED joins us on the Chord Progression Podcast today. An incredible, deep conversation is on the horizon with DED's new album "Resent" releasing on September 19th. On this episode, we dive into:

- How we are currently living in a "changing of the guard" moment in heavy music, and why the self-accountable action to not gatekeeper newer artists is helping fuel the movement.

- The writing of "Resent" from Joe's perspective, and why it is meant to call himself, and all of us, to be accountable for our actions and how to make a change for the better.

- A question of "What would you do if you weren't afraid" as a mantra to take away throughout the record and the album in full.

A fantastic episode with a great artist, that really gets into your skin in the best way. Tap the subscibe button for more episodes like this.

2 years ago, we brought an alt rock and grunge inspired 17 year old artist to the Chord Progression Podcast as he was bringing a fresh sound to the genre. After those 2 years, you might be wondering... what happened to him?

It is 2025 and there is much more to talk about with him. And instead of having you search it up and try to see what he has been up to, we will take care of it ourselves right about now.

Hunter Oliveri rejoins the Chord Progression Podcast for the 2nd time. Hunter is releasing his new album, Teen Slug, on September 19th, and we some catching up to do. On this episode, we talk about:

- What Hunter has been up to over the past 2 years, and why he is putting so much content out on social media in order to garner attention for his music.

- Why he played a show at an Air BnB, as well as why this might be a touring concept that he could pull off to promote the release of Teen Slug.

- The new album Teen Slug, as well as how he further expanded his sound on this new album.

Put yourself in this position. You are an artist in the heavy music space that has been seemingly opening nearly every tour over the past few years. Every time it seems like fans go and see a show, you are on it. You want to take it to the next level, but how?

Well we found a band in that exact same position and asking that exact same question. And what was their answer to that question? Upgrade their music making process to be greater than anything they have ever done before.

The guys in Nevertel join the Chord Progression Podcast today! Nevertel's brand new album, Start Again, is releasing on September 12th, and we take the time to dive into the creation of the album like no one else will. On this episode, we discuss:

- How the band upgraded their ability as writers and music creators on "Start Again" by working with outside producers instead of trying to create everything themselves.

- Why Nevertel wrote "Start Again" across different sessions and in different locations, in order to capture emotions and moments on their songs much more vividly.

- The new album "Start Again," the fan reaction to Some Things, and why the song Ever After is going to be the one that will make this new album stand out the most on release day.

In 2024, not only did we discover this hard-hitting band, but the world discovered them with the invention of "moan core." If you heard the song "Primitive" with the moan in the breakdown, you know that this band had something. Then when you discovered more of their music and their live show, you found there was so much more.

Now right before the release of their debut album, the band is ready to not only show the world more of what their sound is, but how they are going to be one of those bands that will be on top of the heavy music mountain by the end of the decade.

Liv and Lizzie from the Florida metalcore band Not Enough Space join the Chord Progression Podcast once again. But this time, they are here with the release of their debut album (Weaponzie Your Rage) releasing on September 12th. Join us as we discuss.

- What has happened to the band since the release of Primitive, including tours with Capstan, VCTMS, and an upcoming tour with From Ashes to New.

- The fan reaction to the singles off of "Weaponize Your Rage" and how they successfully showed so much more of their sound to the fans.

- "Weaponize Your Rage" as an entire album, and the deep cuts that not only is the band excited about, but a deep look into a few that will stand out as a futher evolved sound for Not Enough Space.

Kevin's Final Thought; This Might Be the Band of 2026: (54:51)

We all know the names of the bands that make it big, go on to have incredibly long and notable careers. Their stories are well known across the musical world. But for every successful band, there are way too many bands that never got there. And some of them, just keep trying.

They try to out of a love for the music, a love for being creative, and a desire to do something outside of the norm. Being able to relate to that and have hope in what you are doing in life connects with so many of us. This band is one of those bands.

Tim and David from the New Jersey hard rock band Rahway join the Chord Progression Podcast, after their self-titled album dropped back in July. Join us as we talk about:

- Not making it to the top level to the musical world for one reason or another, but connecting with other people to love every moment of the journey that they have been on.

- An appreciation for what Sevendust has done as a band, and why their level of success might never be truly understood or matched.

- The music of Rahway, and why being more riff-driven in what they do, allows them to bring out that genuine emotion and love every time.

What happens when you mix emo music and ska music together? Well, you get something that you probably haven't heard yet but know that your interest has been peaked. However, would you be surprised if we told you the ska community hasn't embraced them becasue they aren't "ska enough?"

Well we want to get you into this "sad ska" band that not only is blending emo music so well with the upbeat sounds of ska, but showing even more by expanding their sound, and their message to destigmatize mental health.

The band Horizon Point is here on the podcast today. We get you a fresh look into the band as we talk about:

- How they became a band and how their eclectic tastes in music as a group has created a combined sound of emo and ska called "sad ska" that for some reason, ska gatekeepers are keeping down.

- Their latest single, Bend The Truth, and why they focus their musical message on breaking down mental health stigmas all across the board.

We have seen musicians and artists evolve their sound thorughout their careers all the time. There are always different reasons why artists do that, and those reasons can create great music that you never expected.

This band we found originally started in pop punk, but connected with more of a Warped Tour post-hardcore sound almost immediately and set up their core sound from there. But what is the next step in that evolution? Something cool we expect.

The guys from the emo & post-hardcore band Like Ghosts join the Chord Progression Podcast today. With a brand new EP (we didn't get the title of it) due out before the end of 2025, there is a new sound being added to the mix. Join us as we discuss:

- The origins of the band from pop punk to Warped Tour style post-hardcore, and the story of how a band comes together.

- How Like Ghosts is evolving their sound on their new EP, why they are adding much more EDM influences into the mix, and how it can be seen in the lead single "Better Now"

- Why it is important to take pride in your merch table as an artist, and how Like Ghosts stands out above the rest.
