Christ And Christians episodes
- The Fall of Jim Bakker
Episode Summary:
Jim Bakker was once the king of televangelism, preaching prosperity and salvation to millions through The PTL Club. With his wife, Tammy Faye Bakker, he built a massive Christian empire, including the multi-million dollar Heritage USAtheme park. But behind the scenes, Bakker was running a fraudulent empire—pocketing millions in donations, selling fake "lifetime partnerships," and covering up scandals.
The turning point came in 1987 when a shocking sex scandal involving church secretary Jessica Hahn surfaced, leading to deeper investigations into financial fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering. In 1989, Bakker was sentenced to 45 years in prison for conning his followers out of millions. However, after serving just five years, he made a controversial comeback—this time selling doomsday survival kits and false miracle cures.
In this episode, we unravel the rise, fall, and resurrection of Jim Bakker, exposing how religious leaders exploit faith for power and profit. How did he deceive millions? Why do people still follow him? And what does his story reveal about the dark side of televangelism?
