Questions for us:

1. What are our aims as Christ Church Hessle? How are we seeking to fulfil them? How are we doing in that?

2. How have we seen Jesus doing the same things in recent chapters?

3. What are the similarities and differences between the disciples being sent out in verses 1-2 and us?

4. Jesus authorised the Twelve and sent them out with his power and authority. Where do you personally feel hesitant or uncertain about speaking for Jesus? How does knowing you have been sent by him help reshape that hesitation?

5. How might remembering that mission is part of each of our job descriptions as Christians help us?

6. Jesus pairs proclaiming the kingdom with acts of mercy. Where are you in danger of leaning only one way — speaking without compassion, or compassion without pointing to Jesus?

7. Jesus sent the disciples with less than they needed for their job. What ought this to teach us about how we live on Jesus’ mission?

8. The disciples were told to stick with the hospitable person and to leave the inhospitable town. Are we tempted to dump friends or family who are kind but not interested in Jesus? Or are we easily put off mission by the hostility of others?

9. What question did Jesus’ disciples get everyone thinking about right up to the royal palace? How should that shape our mission as individuals and as a church family?

10. What might be one concrete step you could take on mission this week?

Big Idea: Jesus is vastly stronger than any evil we face and uses his power to save, restore, and commission.

Aim: Be confident that Jesus is stronger than all spiritual powers, so trust him rather than fear.

Questions for us:

1. What emotions do you think the disciples might have felt when the demon-possessed man approached Jesus? How would you have responded to him?

2. What do we think about the reality of spiritual evil today? Are we tempted to fixate on it or forget about it?

3. What does the demons’ response to Jesus teach us about Jesus’ identity and authority?

4. Jesus is outnumbered 5000 to one and yet the demons immediately beg for mercy. How should seeing this help us in the face of our own difficulties?

5. Where might we doubt Jesus’ ability to help us in the midst of our struggles?

6. The townspeople ask Jesus to leave – why might this be the case? What is the difference between fearing Jesus and trusting him?

7. How might we cultivate a healthy reverence for Jesus that leads us to confidence in him and trust rather than avoidance?

8. Why does Jesus send the man away rather than allow him to come with the disciples?

9. How does the man’s testimony further reinforce who Jesus is?

10. We won’t have a testimony as dramatic as this man’s, but we have been rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into Jesus’ kingdom. How might reflecting on this grow us in thankfulness to Jesus?

11. Who might you tell this week about how much Jesus has done for you?

09.11.2025 - Luke 8:22-25 - Jesus’ Authority over Nature

Big Idea: Jesus is the Lord who can command the chaos of the sea to cease.

Aim: Grow in your trust in Jesus to sustain you in the midst of chaos all around.

1. Chaos Reigns (vv. 22–24a)

Questions for us:

1. Have you ever experienced a time when it felt like everything that could go wrong did go wrong? How did that feel and how did you respond in that moment?

2. How might the disciples have been feeling as they set sail across the lake? What might this teach us about the precariousness of “ordinary” life?

3. How should Jesus’ words, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake,” have shaped the disciples’ reaction when the storm struck? What promises from God might we cling to when chaos strikes our lives?

4. Why is Jesus’ sleep in the boat surprising? What does this teach us about who he is?

5. When fear rises, how might you move from fear to faith and terror to trust?

6. What do Jesus’ actions tell us about who he is? How does Psalm 107:23-32 confirm this? How should that increase our confidence in him today?

7. Why might the disciples move from fearing the storm to fearing Jesus? Are they right to do that?

8. What are some practical ways we can help one another in Life Group to trust Jesus more deeply when storms come — whether emotional, relational, financial, or spiritual?

9. How might this passage shape our prayers when we are going through storms in life? What would a prayer of faith sound like rather than a cry of fear?

Big Idea: Jesus' family are those who listen and live by his word and not conceal it.

Aim: Listen to Jesus and put his words into practise rather than conceal them.

1. What images come into your mind when we think about ‘light’ and ‘darkness’? Do we ever use ‘light’ in a frightening way?

2. Take a look at: a. Genesis 1:3-5 b. 1 John 1:5 c. Exodus 13:21 d. Psalm 34:2,9 e. Numbers 6:24-26 f. John 8:12 – what are each of these verses telling us about light and darkness.

3. What is the lamp in Jesus’ parable?

4. Light both guides and exposes – how do we see that in Jesus’ words? Why might we fear the light?

5. Nothing can be hidden from Jesus - how might remember this affect the way we live, pray or speak?

6. What might attentive, careful listening to Jesus’ words look like?

7. Is it enough to just listen to Jesus’ words? How do verses 19-21 answer that?

8. What is Jesus’ promise for those who listen and obey?

9. What are some small ways that you have listened and put God’s word into practise recently?

10. Where might we need to grow in trusting and obeying Jesus’ words?

1. What do we know about Simon? What kind of person is he?

2. What do we know about the woman? What kind of person is she?

3. How would you respond if you hosted a party and someone acted as this woman did?

4. What does Simon’s reaction show about his view of Jesus - and of himself?

5. What’s the point of Jesus’ parable? How does this expose Simon’s heart?

6. Why it is often easy to be like Simon – respectable and religious yet cold towards Jesus?

7. In contrast, how does the woman view her sin? What impact does this have on her attitude to Jesus?

8. We are great sinners, who have received great forgiveness and should therefore show great love. How could we live this out more boldly this week?

9. How can we stir up greater love for Jesus in our hearts?

10. What does the example of the women in chapter 8 teach us?

11. How might reflecting on what Jesus has done for us, motivate us for joyful service?

12.10.2025 - Luke 7:18-35 - Jesus - The Greatest of All Time

Big Idea: To worried John, Jesus reports his deeds but spoilt leaders receive only a rebuke.

Aim: Listen to who Jesus is and let that reassure your doubts, but don't resist him because he threatens your control

1. John’s doubt and Jesus’ reassurance (vv. 18-23)

2. The Pharisee’s doubt and Jesus’ rebuke (vv. 24-35)

Questions for us: We thought about three types of doubt: intellectual, emotional and volitional. Can you think of examples of each one? When might you be most likely to encounter someone struggling with each of these types of doubts? Which kind of doubt have found hardest personally, either in the past or right now? How do we know from the passage that John was experiencing doubt? Why might he have doubted Jesus even after what he had seen? How does Jesus’ answer reassure him? How can Jesus’ answer help us when we face intellectual doubts? How can Jesus’ actions help us when we face emotional doubts?

Why was Jesus critical of the Pharisees? What type of doubt were they showing? When might we speak to someone with this kind of doubt? Why might volitional doubt be more dangerous than intellectual or emotional? How can we as a Life Group help each other when we go through periods of doubt?

Big Idea: Jesus is God visiting his people compassionately with power over death.

Aim: Be comforted and amazed as Jesus reveals his power.

Questions for us: Where do people turn for comfort when feeling loss and grief? What do we look to for help? In what ways do we see Jesus’ compassion in this passage for those grieving? What other examples of compassion do we see in the Bible? How does Jesus’ compassion encourage you when you experience grief or loss? How can we as a church family point those who are grieving to Jesus’ compassion? How can we reflect his compassion in our own lives? Compassion without power is futile – how does this passage strengthen your confidence in Jesus’ power? What should we learn about Jesus’ words from this event? Where do we see Jesus’ ultimate triumph over death? How does this passage strengthen our hope that Jesus has the power to keep the ultimate promise of defeating death? What might be one thing you can say to a struggling friend from this passage? What might be one truth you can cling to yourself when you are grieving?
