Big Idea: Joy is found in loss now for Jesus' sake and reward to come. Comfort now for our sake is a terrible investment.

Aim: Live for joy found in loss now for Jesus' sake and reward to come. Repent of living for comfort now for our sake.

1. Joy now and reward to come for those following Jesus (vv. 20-23)

2. Comfort now but grief to come for those offended by Jesus (vv. 24-26)

Questions for us: If you were to ask your friends what the good life looks like what kind of answers do you think they’d give? What answers might you give? What makes us think, ‘If I had that then everything would be OK’? Jesus tells the people what the blessed life looks like - what does the world blessed mean? What four things does Jesus mention in verse 20-23 and how would you describe them in your own words? What would it look like for us to trust that the blessed life is one that includes hardship because of following Jesus? What might it look like for us to be joyful in difficult circumstances? What do you think of the quote from the Christian worker, ‘I have never made a sacrifice that didn't bring with it a deep, residing joy’? What is the alternative Jesus describes to a life of blessedness? Why are riches, food, laughter and popularity such terrible things to live for? How might you need to adjust your life to live for blessedness after having read these verses? Which area of finances, friendships or life circumstances might you need to consider afresh?

What does Jesus do when faced with opposition? What should that teach us about our own habits when we are in difficulty? How should that help us avoid hopelessness? How does Jesus’ choice of the twelve disciples strengthen our hope? What is it about his choices encourage us? How do we see Jesus to have the power to put things right? How does this encourage you when facing personal difficulties? How does Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament keep us going in hope? Can we trust his promise to make all things new?

Big Idea: The Lord is to be praised for displaying his steadfast love in rescuing his rejected King into his city.

Aim: Praise God for his steadfast love and rejoice in Jesus' victory.

1. Follow the King in praise of the LORD (vv. 1-4)

2. Listen to the King being delivered by the LORD (vv. 5-18)

3. Rejoice with the King in his victory (vv. 19-29)

Questions for us: Who do you think is the worship leader at church and why? Why does it matter that we get worship right? What do verses 1-4 show us about how God’s people we led in worship? Do you think of yourself as a spectator or a participant on Sunday? In what ways are what we do designed for participation? How could you be better ‘warmed up’ to participate? What do these verses tell us we should be participating in? In verses 5-18 who is leading the singing and how do we know? What story do the verses tell and how do we see this fulfilled in Jesus’ life? What does this say about what worship involves? How might you be better prepared to listen in church? What are some good questions we can ask each other over coffee after the service? How do verses 19-29 complete the story for the King? How do we see this fulfilled in Jesus’ life and how should this fuel our worship? What does it mean for our lives that worship doesn’t come to an end but is an ongoing pursuit?
