So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. — Matthew 6:9

The first petition Jesus teaches us: "hallowed be your name". Before we ask for anything for ourselves, we're to ask that God's name be treated as holy. This aligns our hearts with the ultimate purpose of all things—that God be glorified. When his name is hallowed in your life, everything else falls into its proper place.

Be not far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. — Psalm 22:11

David cried out, but read this psalm through Gospel eyes and you'll see another sufferer—the messiah who was utterly forsaken so we'd never be. Jesus quoted this psalm from the cross, taking the full weight of distance from God so we could have his promise: "i will never leave you nor forsake you". When trouble crowds in, he's closer than you think.

So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. — Matthew 6:9

Jesus teaches us to pray, and the first word out of our mouths is "our Father". We're not addressing a distant, impersonal force—we're coming to a Father who delights to hear his children's voices. Through Christ, we've been adopted into the family, and the spirit within us cries out, "abba, Father". Prayer isn't a religious duty; it's a child talking to a loving dad.

from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. — Ephesians 3:15

Paul bows his knees before the Father. There's one family that spans both sides of glory—saints in heaven and saints on earth, all part of the same household, redeemed by the same blood. You're not an orphan. You belong to a family that stretches across time and eternity.

The words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace, like gold purified sevenfold. — Psalm 12:6

In a world of broken promises and double-talking politicians, God's words stand alone. No dross, no hidden agenda, no fine print. You can build your life on every single one of his promises.

They refused to listen and failed to remember the wonders You performed among them. They stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return them to their bondage in Egypt. But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in loving devotion, and You did not forsake them. — Nehemiah 9:17

Israel had rebelled again and again, yet here's what they confessed about God: "You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in loving devotion". He doesn't grudgingly forgive—he's ready to pardon, looking for reasons to show mercy. This isn't a license to sin; it's an invitation to run to him when you've sinned, because that's the kind of Father he is.

He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm. — Psalm 40:2

Before David's feet were on the rock, they were stuck in the miry clay. That's the Gospel in miniature: we were sinking, unable to pull ourselves out, but God reached down, lifted us up, and placed us on the solid foundation—Christ Jesus himself. Then he put a new song in our mouths.

So we say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” — Hebrews 13:6

Fear of man is a snare, but the Lord is our helper. The writer of hebrews quotes the psalmist: "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?". Man can hurt your body and damage your reputation, but he can't separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus. When you're anchored in God's help, human threats lose their power to paralyze you.

Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with Your blessing the house of Your servant will be blessed forever.” — 2 Samuel 7:29

David knew something we often forget: the only blessing that lasts is the one God gives. He prays, "with your blessing let the house of your servant be blessed forever". We chase all kinds of blessings, but the root of every good thing is God's favor resting on us through Christ, in whom we've been blessed with every spiritual blessing.

He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way. — Psalm 25:9

Pride puts up a wall between you and instruction; meekness opens the door. Meekness isn't weakness—it's strength under authority, the willingness to say "i don't know" and the eagerness to learn from God. The Lord doesn't teach the self-sufficient; he teaches the humble.
