Right away in Daniel chapter 1 we see that it's not just possible for the godly to survive in a pagan culture, but Christians can even thrive in such a context when we value God as more precious than anything else this world has to offer. Yet on the other hand, the blessing and favor that God bestows on Daniel here also shows us that even in the midst of suffering and exile, God is still in control, God is still present and protecting his people, and God is still fulfilling his promises.

This introduction to Daniel highlights the Lord's Sovereign hand over all history. Permeating throughout the book is how Daniel -a Jew- was to live as a faithful Jew in the midst of a foreign land, being exiled from his home and especially the temple.
