David spent an extended season of his life running for his life. When he was under threat from Saul he experienced uncertainty, betrayal, and the constant tempration to try to fast forward God’s timeline. We find these stories in 1 Samuel 18-31 and they teach us what to do when things are not going well.

Before David heads off to face Goliath, King Saul tries to dress him in his armor. David’s response teaches us many things about being true to our identity in Christ and following both the path and the plan that God has for us.

When David goes to fight Goliath, it’s not quite the underdog story that it seems, and it prepares us for an even more overqualified underdog who comes after David.

The story of David and Goliath reminds us that the Holy Spirit empowers us and God has prepared us for every opportunity we encounter.

When God has a plan, it almost always involves some kind of waiting. David’s example in 1 Samuel 16:14-23 teaches us what to do while we wait.

David’s anointing as the next King of Israel was accompanied by a lifelong gift of power from the Spirit. When God anoints us as his children and for specific tasks, He also fills us with the power of the Spirit to live out our identity and accomplish His plans.
