TODAY’S GUEST is James Coates, is the pastor-teacher of GraceLife Church of Edmonton, Canada. James was fined, arrested, and imprisoned for being faithful to Christ and keeping the church open, disobeying Canadian authorities. He graduated with MDiv and DMin degrees from The Master’s Seminary. He and his wife, Erin, have two sons. He is co-author of the new book, God vs. Government: Taking a Biblical Stand When Christ and Compliance Collide.

God vs. Government: Taking a Biblical Stand When Christ and Compliance Collide

In the spring of 2020, government mandates forced churches across North America to close their doors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As societal fear and unrest increased, Christians were forced to grapple with how God wanted them to respond to these state-imposed restrictions. After all, didn’t the closure of churches pose a serious threat in a time when people needed spiritual direction more than ever?

Guided by the command in Hebrews 10:25 that churches not forsake meeting together, pastors John MacArthur and James Coates led their congregations to return to in-person meetings—and were swiftly met by unsympathetic governing authorities ready to shut them down again. The ensuing legal battles raised important questions about religious freedom, and more importantly, illuminated what it looks like to take a stand when Christ and compliance collide.

We discuss the importance of pastors re-engaging, ESG scores (Environmental, Social, Governance), federalism, Romans 13, Liberty Pastors (equipping and training godly men & church leaders), and of course, religious freedom.

Unlimited Submission? – book by Dan Fisher: How often have you heard a Christian pastor/bible teacher declare that Romans 13:1-5 requires Christians to submit to their governmental leaders – no matter what, and that they are sinning if they don’t? For years, spiritual leaders have been shackling believers with a flawed interpretation of Romans 13:1-5 – especially as to how it applies to citizens living in a republic like ours.

TODAY’S GUEST: John Hopper has discussed questions about God and life with Muslim clerics in Uzbekistan, Buddhist monks in Canada, slum-dwellers in Guatemala and tennis professionals at Wimbledon. Now, he serves as Houston Area Director for Search Ministries, a nationwide organization focused on creating opportunities for stimulating, sensitive and respectful conversations for those wrestling with life’s big questions.

John has served for 16 years as a pastor at BridgePoint Bible Church in Houston, and has degrees from Trinity University, University of Houston, and Biola University, where he focused on Christian apologetics and worldview studies. He’s here today to talk about his new book, Questioning God.

Segment 1 – we discuss John Hopper’s new book, Questioning God; Segment 2 – we address Joe Biden’s full endorsement of moral relativism and transgender ideology, radical globalism in Canadian government including new hate crimes legislation, and emails from listeners, readers.

Questioning God?: Answers to Questions Worth Asking

“How can anyone believe in God in this scientific age?” Haven’t Christians caused more harm than good?” “I’m a good person. Isn’t that good enough?” In Questioning God?, John Hopper invites those skeptical of Christianity or those doubting the faith they’ve long held to consider honest answers to many commonly asked questions.

“Questioning God? makes a compelling case for the Christian worldview, showing how philosophy, history, psychology, and science point toward the truth of the gospel. It doesn’t dodge the hard questions… This book is practical and to the point and it’s sure to help any open-minded thinker take steps closer to God.”  – Lee Strobel, author of The Case for Christ

Today, we discuss why doctrine matters, why many churches minimize doctrine, and what happened historically to lead to the gradual falling away. We also touch on the push to criminalize Christianity, particularly biblical sexuality, and enforce “hate speech” policy.

“Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” 1 Timothy 4:16

Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. Romans 16:17

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect; 1 Peter 3:15
