Stephen has worked in pastoral-care ministry as an ordained minister in the local church and with International Ministerial Fellowship for over 25 years. His weekly podcast Freedom Realized airs every Friday at 10 AM CST, and his vitally important book is called Freedom Realized – Freedom from Homosexuality & Living A Life Free from Labels. He also serves on the board of directors for Parents and Friends of Ex-gays and Gays. Stephen has been married to his wife Robin since May of 1986. They have three adult children and three grandchildren.

God vs. Government: Taking a Biblical Stand When Christ and Compliance Collide

In the spring of 2020, government mandates forced churches across North America to close their doors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As societal fear and unrest increased, Christians were forced to grapple with how God wanted them to respond to these state-imposed restrictions. After all, didn’t the closure of churches pose a serious threat in a time when people needed spiritual direction more than ever?

Guided by the command in Hebrews 10:25 that churches not forsake meeting together, pastors John MacArthur and James Coates led their congregations to return to in-person meetings—and were swiftly met by unsympathetic governing authorities ready to shut them down again. The ensuing legal battles raised important questions about religious freedom, and more importantly, illuminated what it looks like to take a stand when Christ and compliance collide.

He has been in ministry since 1986 has been the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Hope in Amityville, New York, since 1993. He served bi-vocationally as a pastor and social worker for 16 years. TODAY’S GUEST:  Joel Veldkamp is the international communications officer for Christian Solidarity International. He was born and raised in Iowa, and currently lives in Geneva, Switzerland. He lived in Damascus, Syria, in 2010-2011 working as an English teacher, and thereafter worked for CSI for three years in Washington DC. He received his master’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago in 2016, and his PhD in history in 2021, for a dissertation about the Christians of Aleppo under the French occupation (1920-1936). He has traveled on CSI project trips to Nigeria, South Sudan, Iraq, Egypt, and Armenia. He speaks Arabic, French, and some Armenian.
