Keep the Sabbath Day Holy – Luke 13:10-17

Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. (11)
And behold, there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen
years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself.
(12) When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her,
“Woman, you are freed from your disability.” (13) And he laid his
hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God.
(14) But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had
healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days in which work
ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath
day.” (15) Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not
each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead
it away to water it? (16) And ought not this woman, a daughter of
Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the
Sabbath day?” (17) As he said these things, all his adversaries
were put to shame, and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that
were done by him.
Today I want to talk about the 4th commandment,
keep the Sabbath day Holy.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Keep the Sabbath day holy… the 6th
commandment. One that is often ignored in our time…One
that religious leaders accused Jesus of ignoring.But
we know that Jesus never sinned.We
know that Jesus is the perfect example to follow.So,
church, would it not make sense for us to follow Jesus’ example in regards to
the sabbath?Would
it not make sense for us to keep the sabbath in the same way that Jesus did
when He was on earth? I think it would.So let’s just recap this story before we get
into it this morning…Jesus
was at the Synagogue teaching on the Sabbath.While
Jesus was there a woman came in with an extremely crocked spine, so much so
that she couldn’t even stand up straight.Jesus
seeing her, without even being asks, lays hands on her and immediately heals
her.The
ruler of that synagogue, the pastor if you will, sees this and flips out saying
“It’s the sabbath, you can’t do work today! You heathen!People
have 6 days a week to be healed, let them come on one of those days!Jesus
responds: “Bro, what are you talking about! If your ox or donkey is thirsty on
the Sabbath, don’t you give him something to drink?How
much more important is this woman of God than your silly ox or donkey?!That
pretty much shut up the ruler of the synagogue, and everyone rejoiced at God’s
healing of this woman.It’s a pretty straight forward story, but I
think there is a lot we can learn from it. But lets start by praying.

Now before I get into the points this
morning, let me explain what the Sabbath is, and what it isn’t.The Sabbath is the practice of resting after six
days of work, God gave us this example when He created the universe and all
that was within it.
Genesis
2:1-3 ESV Thus
the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
(2) And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done,
and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.
(3) So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it
God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
So God creates EVERYTHING in 6th
days, and on the 7th day God rests.Was it because God was tired? No of course not,
but God was setting an example for us, work for 6 days, rest on the Seventh.If God does it, we ought to do it too.
Exodus
20:8-11 ESV “Remember
the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (9) Six days you shall labor, and
do all your work, (10) but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD
your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter,
your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner
who is within your gates. (11)
