The Heavenly Father Rewards Those Who Ask! – Luke 11:11-13

We have been talking a lot about prayer this

past month, and God has really opened some doors for people.One of my favorite things as a pastor is seeing

God miraculously answer prayers!Just like how one of my favorite things as a

Father is being able to say YES to my children!Now of course I don’t always say yes. If they

want ice cream for breakfast… not going to say yes.If they want to eat ALL the candy they got from

the parade yesterday in one sitting, yeah that’s a hard pass…But when they ask for things that are good for

them, that makes me joyous!Daddy can we pray together? Absolutely!Daddy can I have more apple slices? SURE THING

BABY!But the best things is when they ask to serve

me!Daddy can I rub your back? YES! ABSOLULTLY!

Hannah gives the best back rubs!Daddy can I help you carry that! I would love

that son!Daddy can I paint your toenails… Uh… how about

you comb my hair?!The Heavenly Father is the same way, isn’t He?

When we ask according to His will, He loves to say YES!Some people never see answered prayers because

they are asking for ice cream for breakfast!

ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

But when we ask according to the will of God, He

says YES!

14:13 ESV 

Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified

in the Son.

I think this principle is so apparent on the

Mission field!Why? Because when you go on missions you are

denying yourself to serve Christ.When you go on missions it’s not about you or

your comfort.When you go on missions you are literally

seeking the Kingdom of God first!

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his

disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

 (2)  And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be

your name. Your kingdom come.  (3)  Give us each day our daily bread,

 (4)  and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who

is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

Over the past few weeks we have talked

extensively about this section of teaching.Jesus’s disciples saw Him praying, they wanted

to be like Jesus, thus they wanted to PRAY like Jesus, so they asked Him “Teach

us to pray”Jesus responds with what is known as the Lord’s

Prayer. In Luke we see a shortened version of this.Jesus starts with “Our Father” which signifies

this is a prayer for Christians, people who are in the family of God. If that’s not you this morning, don’t worry, we

will invite you to join the family at the end of service!Jesus continues “Hallowed be your name” That

means “Let your name be MADE Holy”.We as Christians should desire that everyone

sees God as Holy, and we should seek that in our prayer life. Further we should live in a Holy manner because

we carry the name of Christ with us wherever we go.Then Jesus adds “Your Kingdom come”.God’s Kingdom is everyplace where God is King.Hearts, households, churches, even nations.God desires ALL to be saved and His nation will

include people from every tribe tongue and nation.We are then instructed to pray for provision

“Give us this day our daily bread”Brother Jared Preached on this.Our daily spiritual provision, which is Jesus

Christ the bread of life.Our daily physical provision… not what we want,

but what we need!Finally, we pray about sin… “lead us not into

temptation, forgive our sins as we forgive the sins of others”.What does that mean? It means we hate sin so

much we want NOTHING to do with it, not even temptation.It means we forgive others when they sin against

us.And it means that we, because of our

relationship with God, desire forgiveness when we do things that hurt Him.Again, this is for believers, this is not about

salvation, this is about relationship.That first prayer of repentance is different,

and we will talk about that as we close service.SO! Jesus has taught us about what to pray

for, and what that looks like… know Jesus is going to teach us when to pray and

in what manner.We have learned the details, now we learn the

We Must Deal With Sin – Luke 11:4

The reality is church, we as Christians must

deal with sin… bring that title slide up.

is something that every Christian… every human must deal with.

1 John

1:8 ESV  If we

say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Some versions say “If you say you have no

sin, you are a liar! And the truth is not in you”.Sin

is real church, and we have to deal with it.Therefore

it is not surprise that when teaching His disciples to pray Jesus teaches them

to pray about sin, to work with God the Father concerning our own sin, others

sin, and the temptation to sin.Even

though Jesus HAD no sin, He still taught us to deal with our sin in prayer.Jesus

taught us first to pray that our Father’s name would be made holy and that His

Kingdom would come, that souls would saved, lives changed, and that people

would know God as King!Then

Jesus taught us to pray for provision, give us this day our daily bread.And

finally, Jesus teaches us to pray about sin, to deal with sin in our prayer

life.First,

when we sin we are to ask for forgiveness, because we serve a Father who

forgives.Second,

when others sin against us we should forgive them, because we are a

forgiven people and we serve and imitate a forgiving King!Finally,

We shouldn’t trust ourselves not to sin, therefore we should ask God to

keep us out of temptation.So we are just going to get right into it

today, because… man, this is important.

Point One – When We Sin, We Are Forgiven

Luke

11:4 ESV  and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves

forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

Forgive our sins… forgive our sins…Now I want you to remember something… This

prayer started with the phrase “Our Father” and we talked about this a few

weeks ago. This prayer is for Christians, it is for the born again, the

believer in Christ Jesus. If you are not born again then God isn’t your father.

He is your Creator, but not your father, the Bible is very clear on that.And if you are in that boat, there is

forgiveness and grace for you! Today can be the day you are born again, the day

you find true forgiveness, the day you join the family of God.We will have an opportunity for you at the end

of the service.But for those of us that are born again, this

prayer IS FOR US!Forgive our sins.Now if you are born again, you should know that

your sins have been forgiven.Your past sins, your present sins, your future

sins, they have been forgiven.

103:11-12 ESV 

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love

toward those who fear him;  (12)  as far as the east is from the

west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

(A little side note, that phrase “those who

fear Him” is an Old Testament way of saying “Those who are saved”. Those who

realize that God is and that He is Holy, and as such they run to Him and obey

Him because they understand that ultimately there is no running from Him)So God has forgiven ALL of our iniquities, as

far as the east is from the west… how far is that? Infinitely far! As far as

the judgment of God goes, our sins are no more.The price for our sins was paid on the cross, a

gift we accepted when we were born again, and one that will last for eternity

if we persevere. Amen?!Our sins are forever forgiven, amen?!So then why would a Christian pray “Forgive

us our sins”?Because this isn’t a salvation issue, it’s a

relationship issue, it’s a day to day issue, it’s a life issue.Our church isn’t called Christian Sunday, and it

isn’t called Christian Conversion, it’s called Christian Life!And when we live the Christian life, yes we may

What is our daily bread made of?

Luke 11:313 “Give us each day our daily bread”Ok, that’s it. Thanks for

coming! Make sure to tip your ushers on the way outThis is by far the shortest

verse I have ever spoke onI read this verse and was

thinking to myself “this is pretty self-explanatory isn’t it?”I love how God can take seven

words and totally change your life with themAs I started to dive into the

depths of this verse, God started to open my heart to take this verse out of

the box that I put it in to what He wanted to sayThis verse is so much more

than a verse about breadIt was important enough for

the King of the Universe to teach us to incorporate it in our prayersThat right there has to say

something about this verseAs I would like to think this

verse is talking about literal bread you buy from the store, it’s notRead Exodus 1616 They set out from

Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness

of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second

month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled

against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had

died by the hand of the Lord in the land of

Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have

Luke 11:1 ESV  Now Jesus was praying in a

What do disciples do? They follow their teacher.

So when there teacher prays often, it makes them in turn want to pray often.I imagine the disciples following Jesus and

seeing the power, the passion, the reverence of the prayers of Jesus…Just think about it for a moment… have you ever

heard someone pray and thought to yourself “WOW! That was a powerful prayer!”

or “Man, that was a beautiful prayer” or even “Phew… that prayer was so

passionate… so close to God’s heart”.If you have been around the church for a long

time I am sure you have experienced that kind of prayer… as brother Will would

say, the kind of prayer that makes your spirit baby jump!Now

imagine being a disciple of Jesus as He walked the earth 2000 years ago… what

must it have been like to listen to Him pray… to listen to Him talk to God.The

disciples naturally would want to have that kind of prayer life, the power, the

passion, the beauty of the prayers of Jesus! So they ask Him point blank “Jesus

teach us to pray”.What follows, at least here in Luke, is a

rendition of the Lord’s prayer found in the Gospel of Matthew, slightly

shortened, but none-the-less powerful.So today, and over the next couple of weeks, we

are going to learn to pray like Jesus. And my prayer during these messages is that

it would change you to be all the more Christ like, especially in your prayer

life, amen?

This morning we are going to go through two

verses in the 11th chapter of Luke, the first we have already went through

to introduce this message, the 2nd is were our two points for this

message come from. If you have your bibles turn to Luke 11 and

let’s read verses one through two.

Luke 11:1-2 ESV  Now Jesus was praying in a certain

place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us

to pray, as John taught his disciples.”  (2)  And he said to them,

“When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.

So we have these two prayer points we are going

to talk about, “Hallowed be Your Name, and Your Kingdom come”.And both have what I think to be a central

theme… Making God’s name great.Making His name great in our lives, in our

family, in our churches, and in every nation of the world. Therefore this

message is titled “Make His Name Great”.

Make His Name Great.That is our job, and that is what our prayer

life should reflect…Our Job is to Make His Name GreatMaybe your thinking right now “wait a minute

pastor, I thought our job was to go and make disciples, baptizing them in the

name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey Jesus…”And you would be right! Because there is no

better way to make God’s name great then to bring people into His Kingdom… to

create eternal worshipers, amen?!And so our two points today… hallowed be Your

Name, and Your Kingdom come, they go hand in hand with making disciples, and

you will see what I mean in a moment. Let’s get into it…

Point One – Hallowed Be Your Name

Luke 11:2 ESVa 

And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name…”

The prayer starts with the line “Father” or in

Matthew “Our Father”.So let me just get something out of the way, if

God is not your Father, this prayer is not for you! No amount of praying the

Lords prayer will help you if you miss that first line… God MUST be your Father

for this prayer to have any meaning…And don’t get confused, God is not everyone’s

Father. He is everyone’s creator, but He is not everyone’s Father.Speaking to people who have not been born again

Jesus said this…

John 8:44-45 ESV  You are of your father the

devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the

beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no trut

Luke 10:38-42 ESV  Now as they went on their

way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her

house.  (39)  And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s

feet and listened to his teaching.  (40)  But Martha was distracted

with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that

my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”

 (41)  But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious

and troubled about many things,  (42)  but one thing is necessary.

Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

What I really think is interesting about this

section of Scripture is it’s juxtaposition with the parable of the good

Samaritan.Right, last week we read through the parable of the

good Samaritan…A lawyer tested Jesus asking “What must I do to

get to heaven”Jesus asked “What do you think you need to do

according to scripture to get into heaven?”The lawyer responds “Love God with all of who I

am and love my neighbor as myself”.Jesus responds saying “Yup, if you do that

perfectly you will get into heaven”.Now the lawyer KNEW he had not always loved

everyone, so looking to justify himself he asks “But who really is my

neighbor”.And Jesus illustrates that his neighbor is

everyone, even people that he despises, and that he has to love everyone in a

way that takes great sacrifice.So we have this parable, about how to walk out

perfect Christianity. And it sounds a lot like works-based Christianity doesn’t

it? Like “If you do enough good, and you do it all the time, then you will make

it into heaven. Just keep doing good works”.Then we keep reading and we come to today’s

section of scripture, the story of Mary and Martha.Jesus comes into town, on His way to Jerusalem,

and He and His disciples are welcomed into this house owned by Martha.Immediately Jesus sits down in the house and

begins teaching and preaching, and Mary, who was Martha’s sister, sits at

Jesus’ feet eating it all up.So Martha is doing everything to get her house

in order for Jesus and she is having a bit of a freak out moment because there

is SO MUCH that needs to be done…And in a moment of weakness she bursts out

blaming her sister, and even trying to get Jesus on her side!

Luke 10:40 ESV  But Martha was distracted

with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that

my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”

And look how Jesus responds, gently and with

love, but with truth…

Luke 10:41-42 ESV  But the Lord answered her,

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,

 (42)  but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion,

which will not be taken away from her.”

What’s Jesus saying? He is saying “Martha, chill

out a bit, I am here now, that’s what’s important, your sister realizes that…

it’s all about me, I am eternal, my truths are eternal, my love and my saving

grace is eternal… everything you are doing to serve me, as much as I appreciate

it… it’s going to pass away with this world… but my love will never pass away”.Now, think about the context of this section of

scripture, it comes RIGHT AFTER a parable about doing good works, the good

Samaritan.Now Jesus rebukes a woman for trying to do good

works that directly benefits Jesus… What’s going on here?Honestly guy’s, I think God is trying to remind

us… it’s not about good works, it’s all about Jesus.It’s not about working hard to be perfect, it’s

all about Jesus.It’s not about trying to make God happy, it’s

all about Jesus.

Don’t Get

it Twisted! It’s all about Jesus!The whole point of the parable of the good

Samaritan was to show us that no matter how hard we try to do enough good to

get into heaven… we will always fall short.Then we see the story of Mary and Martha, as if

God is saying… Just in case you are confused about the parable of the Good

Samaritan… let me make it clear “It’s n

Luke 10:21 ESV  In that same hour he rejoiced

in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed

them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 

Now let me stop right here, I could preach a

whole sermon on this verse right here… do you see what is happening… look at

the first line and the last line…Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit… for such was

the Fathers gracious will…Now we have already talked about the beauty of

God revealing His secrets to us, we had a whole sermon on that… but look at

this… Jesus is rejoicing… and what is He rejoicing in? His Fathers will!”Some of us need to start rejoicing in the

fathers will and stop bemoaning the Fathers will, amen?!When you learn the secret practice of rejoicing

in the Fathers will… woah! Life becomes way better y’all!My best friend Eddy was dying of Cancer… I asked

him if he was angry at God… He said “Why would I be angry, either I get

miraculously healed and can testify of God’s goodness, or I die and go to

heaven and get to Worship God on the streets of Gold… it’s a win win!”Eddy had joy up until his last breath, and it

wasn’t because of his circumstances, because they stunk! It was because of his

God! Because His God is good all the time!Rejoice in the will of the Father church, and

your life will be marked with Joy!Let’s keep going with this section of scripture…

Luke 10:22-24 ESV  All things have been handed

over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or

who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal

him.”  (23)  Then turning to the disciples he said privately,

“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!  (24)  For I tell you

that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it,

and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

Do you understand the joy that it is to have a

written Bible? Jesus lives in our heart, and His word… His word we can hold in

our hand!We have secrets available to us, truth available

to us, revelation available to us that prophets and kings desired to see but

NEVER saw… desired to hear but never heard. AND WE HAVE IT! Please don’t

neglect it church!You have a treasure more valuable, more secrete,

more powerful then Nicolas Cage could ever discover in the back of Mount

Rushmore! DON’T NEGLECT IT CHURCH!I’m preaching and we haven’t even gotten started

yet! Let’s go on to the main passage for today… the main passage today is the

parable of the Good Samaritan.Now parable is just a fancy word for “Sermon

illustration”… it is a practical story that makes a deep theological point.I use parables all the time in my preaching,

last week I used the parable of the GPS, it tells us how to get to were we are

going turn by turn, step by step. Such it is with God, His Word is a lamp unto

our feet, telling us not just the destination, but the way there step by step

turn by turn.Now Jesus is going to use a practical story to

illustrate a deep theological point, He is going to give a sermon example, here

He tells the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Luke 10:25-37 ESV  And behold, a lawyer stood up

to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal

life?”  (26)  He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you

read it?”  (27)  And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God

with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with

all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”  (28)  And he said to

him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

 (29)  But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who

is my neighbor?”  (30)  Jesus replied, “A man was going down from

Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him

and departed, leaving him half dead.  (31)  Now by chance a priest

was going down that road, and when he saw h

Luke 10:17-20 ESV  The seventy-two returned with

joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”

 (18)  And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from

heaven.  (19)  Behold, I have given you authority to tread on

serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall

hurt you.  (20)  Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the

spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Guy’s, I am terrible with direction… like I have

NO idea which way north is…You ever have someone give you directions to

turn north on a road, then turn east…Like what does that mean… why do your

instructions require a compass?Anyone else here just horrible with direction?

Great, all of you will understand this example. For the rest of you just humor

me, ok…2019 is a great time to be alive if you are bad

with direction… because we have devices in our pockets that communicate with

computers floating around in outerspace that give us pin point instructions on

how to get from point A to B.Turn left here, turn right there… in a thousand

feet use the second lane from the right to take the off ramp toward Des Moines…

IT’S GREAT!But those of you who are bad with direction,

hopefully you will understand this, you ever put in an address and your GPS

starts telling you were to go, and you are like.. HUH?Are you SURE THAT’s RIGHT?! How does this road

lead there?!And you have to check to make sure you put in

the right address…But if you are like me you trust your GPS. No

matter what, I trust that GPS.So you start following it, and eventually, after

you taking you a really weird way, it pops you out right were you need to go…

and you are like?! HUH?! THAT ROAD LEADS HERE?!How did I even get here?!Like for example… there are at least 4 ways to

get to Marion from my house…You can take 1st all the wayOr you can take Cottage GroveOr you can take EdgewoodOr you can take 30 down to 151…Now the first five times or so I went to Marion

I took first…So the first time my GPS told me to take

Edgewood down toward Blairsferry to get to Marion I was like “HUH?” That’s like

the opposite direction…Or the first time it told me to take 30 toward

Elly, I was like “HUH?!” There’s no way… is there like a magic portal that

spits me out in Marion…I am not the only one who has experienced this

right?!But I trust my GPS because I know I have a

horrible sense of direction, and no matter how unexpected, it always gets me

there.Y’all see

Point One – Victory Comes From Obeying Jesus

Luke 10:17-19 ESV  The seventy-two returned with

joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”

 (18)  And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from

heaven.  (19)  Behold, I have given you authority to tread on

serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall

hurt you.

What’s happening here? If you remember from

three weeks ago we preached on Luke 10:1-10 where Jesus sends out 72 of His

followers to preach the gospel…

Luke 10:1 ESV  After this the Lord appointed

seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town

and place where he himself was about to go.

Right, you guy’s remember this… Jesus sends out

the 72, and he gives them really specific instructions. He tells them what to

bring and what to leave behind, He tells them where to stay in the towns, and

how long to stay, and what to say. And He sends them out to preach the Kingdom

of God is near…Now they are returning… and look at what

happens… they are surprised at how victorious they were…
