Introduction

Luke 10:1-12 ESV  After this the Lord appointed

seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town

and place where he himself was about to go.  (2)  And he said to

them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray

earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

 (3)  Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst

of wolves.  (4)  Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and

greet no one on the road.  (5)  Whatever house you enter, first say,

‘Peace be to this house!’  (6)  And if a son of peace is there, your

peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.  (7) 

And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the

laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house.  (8) 

Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you.

 (9)  Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has

come near to you.’  (10)  But whenever you enter a town and they do

not receive you, go into its streets and say,  (11)  ‘Even the dust

of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know

this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’  (12)  I tell you, it

will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

You know there seems to be a lot of confusion

over what this phrase “the Kingdom of God” means.Not confusion amongst scholars, they all seem to

agree.But confusion in the church.Many in the church think that the Kingdom of God

is only established when Jesus returns.That somehow these verses are talking about the

second coming of Jesus.That somehow Jesus is sending out these 72 to

preach the second coming of Jesus…But church, it never makes sense to preach the

second coming of Jesus to those who have never even heard of the first coming

of Jesus.The second coming only makes sense in context of

the first…So Jesus takes these 72 believers… and He sends them

out with this powerful mission…This faith filled mission… telling them to go

out into the harvest, saying it is RIPE… meaning there are MANY PEOPLE ready to

be born again after receiving the good news.Telling them that they are going as lambs in the

midst of wolves… but that they should go none the less…Telling them not even to bring basic necessities

with them, but to have the faith that it will be provided.And telling them to preach this important

message “THE KINGDOM OF GOD HAS COME NEAR”.Go into a house and if they receive you tell the

whole town “The kingdom of God is near!”And if a village doesn’t revceive you, don’t

waist your time there move on, find someone who will listen, and tell them “The

kingdom of God is near!” “THE KINDGOM OF GOD HAS DRAWN NEAR TO YOU!”Let everybody know, everywhere you go “THE

KINGDOM OF GOD HAS DRAWN NEAR”It’s such an important message “The kingdom of

God has drawn near!”… such an important message, but what does it mean?We are

going to talk about that on this Easter Sunday

Point One – The Kingdom of God – God with Us

Genesis 2:7-8 ESV  then the LORD God formed the

man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life,

and the man became a living creature.  (8)  And the LORD God planted

a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.

Here we see the Kingdom of God for the first

time.And God creates man to populate His KingdomAnd God creates a garden, a place in his Kingdom

on earth for man to live…A place for God to walk with and talk with us.

For us to enjoy Him and for Him to enjoy us.The Garden of Eden, God’s Kingdom, literally

heaven on earth. Where God and mankind live together, walk together, talk

together, fellowship together. No separation between man and God. THIS IS THE

KINGDOM OF GOD.You see the Kingdom of God was never meant to

will follow You wherever You go.”  (58)  And Jesus said to him,

“Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has

nowhere to lay His head.”  (59)  Then He said to another,

“Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my

father.”  (60)  Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their

own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”  (61)  And another

also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them

farewell who are at my house.”  (62)  But Jesus said to him,

“No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the

kingdom of God.”

If you recognize this scripture, good! It’s the

same scripture from last week!Last week I preached the message “Me First!”

about how so many of us are willing to follow Jesus, but we have our own needs

to take care of first.There was these three examples, right, that

translated into three sermon points…First there was the main that said I will follow

you!But Jesus reminded him that following him may

not always be comfortable…That translated to the point “Me First! I need

to be comfortable”Then there was the man who said “I will follow

you, but let me first burry my father…” He was saying he had a very important

job that needed to be done, in this case taking care of his aging father.That translated to the point “Me First! I have a

job to finish”Finally there was the man who said “Let me first

say good bye to my friends and family” Suggesting that our relationship needs

come before Christ.This translated to the point “Me First! I need

to care for My Family and FriendsI thought it was a pretty good sermon, but as I

was debriefing with my wife she couldn’t shake the feeling that the sermon came

off as too harsh.I asked “How do you preach “No you can’t bury

your father, let the dead bury the dead” without coming off harsh, it was a

pretty harsh thing for Jesus to say!”Amanda agreed, but still that feeling persisted…And over the years I have learned to trust my

wife, she is a pretty smart cookie… so I started to pray about it…Then the Lord showed me, clear as day, how to

preach these verses without being harsh.Now don’t

get me wrong, the Lord wasn’t rebuking me, and I think the sermon last week was

fire, I know some people needed to hear that… but I think some people need to

hear the flip side too.

So last week the sermon was “Me First”… this

week the sermon is “Jesus First”If our heart is Jesus first… if we are all in

with Jesus… if we will go with Jesus wherever He goes… the beauty of that is

that He will take care of everything else. Every stress, every anxiety, every

pressure, every job… If we trust Jesus with it, He will take care of it, He

will guide us, He will relieve us.I am going to tell you what I am talking about.

But first, let’s pray!

Point One – Jesus First! He Comforts Us

Luke 9:57 NKJV  Now it happened as they

journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You

wherever You go.”  

This is the heart we are supposed to have.

“LORD” this man says… that word means so much, that title means so much… it

means King, Ruler, Advisor, Director… It means what You say goes…“Lord, I will follow you wherever you go’.Folk’s Christianity is a journey, we are going

with Jesus!If we want to stay in Jesus we must go WITH

Jesus… because Jesus just doesn’t sit still, He has work to do. There are lost

to be saved.So this man says “Lord I will go with you

wherever! If you go there, then I am going…” And look how Jesus responds.

Luke 9:58 NKJV  And Jesus said to him, “Foxes

have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to

lay His head.”

Now when I preached on this last I talked about

the clearest reading of this, that Jesus was either rebuking or warning this

This morning we get to talk about three of the

most common excuses for why people fail to serve Jesus Christ as Lord.People who WANT to follow Him.People who publicly confess Him as Lord.People who cry out to Him “Let me follow you”.But, non-the-less, these are people who are not

all in, they are not fully committed, they have hindrances to following Jesus

100%.If you remember, last week we talked about how

you are either completely for Jesus or you are completely against Jesus.FOR OR AGAINST, there is no fence sitting!Now Jesus takes that concept and He shows us a

very personal application of it…He applies this concept to people who would be

followers of Him.In the same way that those in the world are

either for me or against me, I look at you and say you have to chose are you

for me or against me… there are no part time disciples… you are either all in

or you are all out.So Jesus gives us three examples of

would-be-followers who all have the same excuse, but applied to three different

areas.They all have the same excuse for why that can’t

give 100% to Jesus… what’s the excuse?

Jesus’ response to this is “No no no, it’s either all Jesus, none of you, or no

Jesus at all”.Let’s talk about that…

Point One – Me First! I need to be comfortable!

Luke 9:57 NKJV  Now it happened as they

journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You

wherever You go.”  

A man comes to Jesus and says “I will follow you

wherever you go, Jesus!”PRAISE

GOD! What a wonderful commitment to make to Christ! This church family is the

beginning of being born again.He is confessing Jesus as Lord. He is saying “I

will do whatever you say” just lead me, and I will follow.What bad could come from this… What rebuke could

possibly be offered to this man?Well Jesus knows the heart of the man… and it is

apparent in the way Jesus responds…

Luke 9:58 NKJV  And Jesus said to him,

“Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has

nowhere to lay His head.”

What you will notice as you read through the New

Testament, church, especially the Gospels, is that Jesus likes to use extremes

to make a point. Because if it is true in the extreme situation it is true in

the moderate situation.For example Jesus says in Matthew 5:29 that if

your eye causes you to sin that you should pluck it out, because it is better

to enter heaven with one eye then hell with both eyes.Now if that is the case, then it is pretty easy

to assume that if Netflix causes you to sin you should cancel your

subscription.The point is, it is easy to take an extreme

example and apply it to any area of life.And that is the situation we have here. A man

says he will follow Jesus wherever… and Jesus takes it to the full extreme to

see if this man really means it.Jesus says “Foxes have holes and birds have

nests… but not me, I have nowhere to lay my head”.Jesus is taking it to the extreme… he is saying

“Every creature in Creation has a place to call home… are you willing to follow

Introduction

Luke 9:49-56 ESV  John answered, “Master, we

saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because

he does not follow with us.”  (50)  But Jesus said to him, “Do not

stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”  (51)  When

the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

 (52)  And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a

village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him.  (53)  But

the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

 (54)  And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said,

“Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”

 (55)  But he turned and rebuked them.  (56)  And they went

on to another village.

What we see here is two examples of… well… the

Disciples missing it yet again…Two examples of the disciples handling others in

a way contrary to the message of Christ.And anytime the disciples mess up we need to

listen church. Because if they could do it while physically walking with Christ

then you better believe we can make these mistakes while Spiritually following

Christ!So in this example in Luke first we see this

person casting out demons in Christ’s name, and the Disciples say “Jesus we

should stop them!”Jesus rebukes them.Then they move on and a village rejects Christ,

clearly standing against Christ, and the Disciples say “Jesus, let us call down

fire and brimstone on them! Let FIRE rain down from heaven and destroy them.”Jesus rebukes them…Those poor disciples just can’t get things

right…AND WE ARE SO MUCH LIKE THEM CHURCH.When people aren’t with us, we look down on them

as if they are less then them…And when people are against us we want to CRUSH

THEM!But that is not the way of Christ, and if we as

a church are going to be Christlike then in can’t be our way either!

Point One – Unity with Those Who are For Christ

Luke 9:49-50 ESV  John answered, “Master, we

saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because

he does not follow with us.”  (50)  But Jesus said to him, “Do not

stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”

On the heals of arguing over who was greatest…

now the disciples are collectively looking down on this person casting out

demons in Jesus name…Do you see that…Just before this the disciples were arguing

“Which one of us is greatest” Jesus rebukes them… then they seemingly go “Ok,

none of us is the greatest… but we are certainly greater than THAT GUY!”Like what did the disciples have against this

guy?Here is what we know about this guy: He was

casting out demons in Jesus name and he was not one of the 12 disciples…So the disciples didn’t have a problem with this

man casting out demons…They didn’t have a problem with this man using

Jesus’ name…What they had a problem with was that he was

doing all of that EVEN THOUGH he was not one of the 12 disciples…

Luke 9:49 ESV  John answered, “Master, we

saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because

he does not follow with us.”

What’s the problem they have with this man? “He

does not follow with us”.Now we know from scripture that if you are not a

Christian that you can’t cast out demons…The seven sons of Sceva tried that and it worked

out poorly for them…

Acts 19:13-16 NIV  Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the

name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say,

“In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come

out.”  (14)  Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were

doing this.  (15)  One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus

I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?”  (16)  Then the

man who had the evil spir

WHAT A THING FOR JESUS TO SAY! I can imagine if Jesus said that today… People would call Him a pharisee… They would call Him legalistic… They would say “That’s not very Christ like of you Jesus!” To call a whole generation FAITHLESS AND TWISTED! But remember, as Christians we judge by the fruit, and the fruit of Jesus’ comments to the disciples was that they preached the gospel to the world and flipped everything upside down on it’s head.

Introduction

Luke 9:37-42 ESV  On the next day, when they

had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him.  (38)  And

behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son,

for he is my only child.  (39)  And behold, a spirit seizes him, and

he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and

shatters him, and will hardly leave him.  (40)  And I begged your

disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”  (41)  Jesus answered,

“O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with

you? Bring your son here.”  (42)  While he was coming, the demon

threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit

and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

So again, remember the setting here church…Jesus and three disciples went up the mountain

and the disciples watched as Jesus was transfigured into His coming glory.Not only that but Elijah and Moses came down

from Heaven to talk with Him.A whole night passed with crowds waiting and

gathering at the base of the mountain with the remainder of Jesus’ disciples.When Jesus comes down the next day this scene

unfolds… A father brings his son to Jesus and begs Jesus to cast out the demon

inside of him. He even goes as far as to say that he begged Jesus’ disciples to

cast out the demon but they couldn’t.That’s when Jesus says this line, the one that

we based last week’s sermon on and we will continue to focus on today…

Luke 9:41 ESV  Jesus answered, “O faithless

and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring

your son here.”

WHAT A THING FOR JESUS TO SAY!I can imagine if Jesus said that today…People would call Him a pharisee…They would call Him legalistic…They would say “That’s not very Christ like of

you Jesus!”To call a whole generation FAITHLESS AND

TWISTED! But remember, as Christians we judge by the fruit, and the fruit of

Jesus’ comments to the disciples was that they preached the gospel to the world

and flipped everything upside down on it’s head.And it was the Disciples, church, that Jesus was

calling faithless in twisted. I am fairly confident of that.Even though scripture does not specify exactly

who Jesus meant when He said “O Faithless and twisted generation” I think it is

fair to say from deduction that it was likely the disciples Jesus meant.Why? Because the Father was not being faithless,

in fact he was being faith filled by bringing his son to Christ.The crowds were not being faithless, they were

gathering… waiting for Jesus.But the disciples… for some reason the disciples

could not cast out this demon…WHY!? WHY COULDN’T THE DISCIPLES CAST OUT THIS

DEMON? That’s the question.Because we know from the begging of the chapter

that they were given the task to cast out demons and they were given the power

and authority to do so!

Luke 9:1-2 ESV  And he called the twelve

together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure

diseases,  (2)  and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God

and to heal.

So if they had the Power and Authority to cast

out demons and they knew it was there task to cast out demons while preaching

the Gospel… WHY COULDN’T THEY CAST OUT THIS ONE!?Ever answer I can think of… why couldn’t they

cast out this demon… the response of Jesus “O faithless and Twisted generation”

seems like a fair response… because whatever the reason for why the disciples

couldn’t cast out the demon… whatever it was… it most certainly was a lame

excuse…Therefore I am fairly
