Ephesians 6:12 states "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places". 

This verse reminds believers that their ultimate struggle is not against human authorities, but against deeper spiritual forces "not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, the powers of this dark work". 

This perspective can create tension with modern statism, which often elevates political structures, national identity, and institutional authority as primary arenas of meaning and loyalty. Christianity, by contrast, frames power as transient and subordinate to a higher, spiritual sovereignty of God, challenging believers to question where their ultimate allegiance lies. When the state demands moral conformity or ideological alignment that conflicts with conscience, this tension becomes especially pronounced. 

Can faith rooted in spiritual warfare and eternal authority fully harmonise with systems that claim authority over every aspect of earthly life or must one ultimately give way?
