In 1 John 1:4 John tells us the PURPOSE of his writing the book - "That your joy may be full". In chapter five and verse thirteen he tells us that we can have peace in our salvation when he tells us, "Ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life". From 1:4 to the end of the book on chapter five, John tells us how we can have peace and fullness of Joy. It may be summarized this way, "The ABUNDANCE of your JOY (1:4) is directly correlated with the ASSURANCE of your JUSTIFICATION (5:13)."
