Holly and Mistletoe, apprentices in the Evergreen Memory Archive, discover that stored memories are not just suffering from density drain but are having their core emotional content completely removed, leaving inert, cold shells. This is identified as an aggressive attempt to destabilize the local joy wellspring. When their standard diagnostic tools are instantly neutralized by the localized energy field, Mistletoe realizes they must use an unsanctioned, highly volatile agent. They decide to breach the lower levels of the Archive, the Root Cellars, to retrieve the forbidden Sun-Drawn Sap, the only substance known to forcibly re-inject pure emotional resonance into failing memory cores, in a desperate attempt to save the irreplaceable contents of the Evergreen Heartwood Box.
