Finding Purpose After Divorce: How to Heal, Grow and Thrive in New Relationships
The end of a marriage can leave one feeling lost, confused and questioning their self-worth. However, as Walt Thiessen discovered after his recent divorce, this challenging transition period also provides an opportunity for personal growth. On a recent episode of LOA Today, Walt joined host Jodi Lynn Creighton and relationship coach Christopher Hill to discuss navigating modern dating and rebuilding trust in oneself after the trauma of separation.
Walt reflected on feeling an urgency to find a new partner immediately following his divorce. “I wanted that feeling of being married and in a relationship again,” he said. However, Christopher emphasized the importance of first allowing oneself to grieve the end of a marriage before seeking out romance. “Separating, healing and being open to new opportunities are key steps,” he noted. Walt recognized this wisdom, acknowledging he needed time to process his emotions before diving back into dating.
A recurring theme in the conversation was taking responsibility for one’s role in past relationships, in order to learn and improve. As Christopher pointed out, “Regardless of fault, owning our actions frees us to move forward.” Walt applied this to his own marriage, conceding “It took two people for communication to break down as it did.” Jodi Lynn shared a similar experience, saying self-reflection helped her understand emotions she was previously unaware of.
All agreed modern dating presents new challenges, from superficial app profiles to difficulty translating online interactions to real life. Christopher advised focusing inward first through hobbies and friendships rather than obsessing over finding a partner. Walt saw truth in this, realizing he brought preconceived filters that limited his options.
