The history of the Judges is the history of Israel's idolatry. This is made vividly clear in the story of Abimelech, as Israel rejects God as their King in order to follow a wicked, Baal-worshipping king. But disaster follows. While it is easy to read this passage and mock the folly of such a deceision, how often do our own lives go down the same path, rejecting the One true God and replacing Him with pretender kings? As we consider the sudden rise and fall of Abimelech may we also be forced to consider the idols we have established in our own hearts.

We are in danger of getting so excited about Gideon's victory over Midian in Judges 7 that we fail to remember how Israel's sin is still a serious problem. Therefore, we need the reminder found in Judges 8. It is precisely when Israel experiences military victories and ought to be rejoicing that we actually see them losing because of continued covenant faithlessness to God. May we heed the warnings found in this text lest we too find ourselves losing to sin in our lives and in the church.

The world is constantly clamoring for more power, more prestige, more influence, which means that anything that appears weak is despised and ridiculed. However, if we're not careful Christians can adopt this same mindset, looking to worldly power and wisdom to accomplish spiritual goals. But while the world seeks power, God actually delights in using weakness to show His strength. A prime example of this truth is found in the story of Gideon, and from our text, we'll see how God is able to use what is considered weak, insignificant, and foolish by the world in order to reveal His own power, all for His own glory.

In Judges 4 we witnessed the salvation of God as Deborah and Barak led the people into battle. Now in chapter 5, these same two lead the people in singing the triumphs of Yahweh. He is the only one true and living God; He is a God who powerfully rescues His people!
