This section of John is one of them most debated texts in the Bible. The Roman Catholic Church uses this text to teach transubstantiation, the doctrines of the real and literal presence. However, if this text is taken within the overall context of John chapter six, that interpretation is an impossibility. In context, eating Christ flesh and drinking his blood are synonymous with believing and coming to him by faith. This text teaches the need to appropriate Christ by faith. Salvation by faith alone through Christ alone.
