Preceding Sermon: Vs. 37-40. The election of the Father explains “why” it is that any come to Christ.

Vs 41-46. The effectual call (the drawing of the Father) reveals “how” it is that anyone comes to Christ. The drawing is effectual and saves all that the Father has given to Christ.

Salvation from beginning to end is the work of God and evokes great praise from God’s people. Simultaneously, evangelism and missions are unleashed as the Gospel is seen as unstoppable in the purposes of God. The most hardened sinner–even opponents of the Gospel–will obey the call and drawing of the Father. All given by the Father are saved and raised up on the last day.

Why does anyone come to Jesus at all? After facing great rejection from the crowd at Capernaum Jesus explains why he has not failed and why it is that anyone comes and believes at all. www.heredeems.com

In this text in John 6 we see Jesus open invitation to come to him and receive eternal life. Despite seeing Jesus, hearing his teaching, and witnessing his miracles the people don't respond to him. Why? The answer is shocking and profoundly humbling.

Who is Jesus? The gospel of John reveals to us who he is through his teachings, miracles and sayings. In this sermon we encounter the first of Jesus's "I AM" statements; I Am The Bread Of Life! These statements reveal who he is and what he does. This bold declaration demands a response.

After witnessing the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 the crowd pursues Jesus on the other side of the sea, near Capernaum. Jesus however, knows their hearts. He knows they want him to be filled again with bread. Jesus directs this conversation toward eternal matters. His desire is that man would be filled and satisfied, but that they be filled eternally with spiritual bread, given from God that endures to eternal life.

Paul wants the Ephesians to know the immeasurable power of God toward them and so that they might understand this incredible power he gives them an example. In this text we see find the disciples caught in a wind storm. They struggle for hours against the wind and the waves. Then we see the sovereignty of Jesus as he comes to them walking upon the water. In their struggle we learn to see Jesus from a new perspective. John 6:1-15 in many ways sets the table for understanding the bread of life discourse. This is Jesus' most public miracle and it is meant to lead us to the truth of who Jesus is.
