Remember Sports – Across the Line

Would you ever give your heart away? No really: actually give your heart away?

My guest today is Naga Abhinav Sujal Kamireddy ( “Abhi”), the director of Theatre UNB’s upcoming presentation of With Love and a Major Organ by Julia Lederer. He joins me to talk about his debut opportunity to direct a play, how the play is open to interpretation and working with the team that made this production possible.

With Love and a Major Organ opens on February 25, and runs nightly at 7:30pm until February 27. They are running a contest for tickets, so if interested, visit the Theatre UNB Facebook page.

Do you like synthesizers. Like, really, really, really like synthesizers? I mean, either way, here we go!

But before we get to that, we’ve got some rock tunes ranging all the way from mathy to nervy, starting out with a set of Cursive, Q And Not You, and The Statues.

We then venture deep into Canadian pop-rock with a lo-fi-ish track from an unexpected source, pre-Steal My Sunshine Len! We round out the set with a personal fave from The New Pornographers and then, straight from the cover of a 1974 issue of Tiger Beat, it’s Tony Defranco and the Defranco Family.

Then we crank up the nostalgia with some vibed-out tracks from Dom, Renny Wilson, and a chillwave classic from Neon Indian. Are you a DJ at an indie pop night? Cue these tracks up.

Then we move on to chillwave’s younger cousin, vapourwave, with a track by Saint John’s own Blank Banshee. Now, if you’ve never heard of vapourwave, it’s a genre of music inspired by screensavers, department store muzak, and old computer graphics, which brings us to out next track, Too Far by Jan Hammer. This is from the soundtrack of Beyond the Mind’s Eye, a 1992 CGI demo-reel featuring lots of dancing cones and spheres. Segments from this show were run late at night on stations like YTV and ASN when programs ran short, and I’ve happily watched those bip-bopping geometric shapes a gajillion times. Finally, Tangerine Dream from their album The Optical Race, from what has retroactively has been called “The Melrose Years”, a trio of very poppy albums they put out between ’88-’90. This one is delightfully corny. Or maybe obnoxiously corny. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Finally, we go hard in the electronic paint. Starting out with Classixx, we have Rhythm Santa Clara, from their album Hanging Gardens, which has almost the same cover art as Tangerine Dream’s album (check the picture). Then we move on to a really interesting track from 1988 from Dion & Tony called 1015. The Tony in this group went on to significant success as a hip hop producer under the name Twilite Tone, while Dion went on to become the MASSIVELY influential Chicago producer, No I.D! Insane to think about how they built this track back in 1988 using only drum machines and sequencers. Next Zomby brings us something really crazy with Pumpkinhead’s Revenge, which I’d describe as chiptune with a massive kick drum.

Finally, CPC Gangbangs take us home with some grimy Quebecois garage punk.

There are certain voices that are stitched into the fabric of Canadian alternative rock. Spend five minutes talking to Ryan Dahle and you realize he’s never really thought of himself as part of a “scene” — even though he helped define one.

In our latest episode of Once On Much, I chat with Ryan Dahle — best known for his work with Age of Electric, Limblifter, and Mounties — for a wide-ranging conversation that somehow felt both nostalgic and completely present-tense.

When I asked what he remembers about the so-called golden era of ’90s Canadian alt-rock — the era of Sloan, Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party, Moist, and I Mother Earth — his answer wasn’t about a scene. It was about survival. Rehearsal spaces in Vancouver. Long drives. Inside jokes. Being locked in with your bandmates and figuring it out as you went. They didn’t see themselves as part of a Canadian movement; they were just chasing what excited them, shaped as much by Seattle’s explosion as anything happening at home. The bands that embraced them — like The Odds and The Northern Pikes — were peers, not templates.

If there was a common thread, it was MuchMusic. For a generation, it was a tastemaker and lifeline, with shows like The Wedge and Power Hour shaping identities in real time. In a move that feels almost impossible now, he cold-called the station to pitch a 16mm video. It got played. Momentum followed — relentless touring, endless phone calls, pure hustle. When “Remote Control” landed on Big Shiny Tunes 2, it cemented something bigger than airplay: a million-plus CDs spinning their name into collective memory. From Limblifter’s rule-bending songwriting experiments to Mounties’ lightning-in-a-bottle collaboration with Hawksley Workman and Steve Bays, the throughline isn’t nostalgia — it’s curiosity.

Well, here’s our second episode, it was originally supposed to be on Fascism, the rise of right wing extremism, illiberalism, democratic backsliding, I wound up having so much more to say by the time this episode was done.

I essentially got through talking about the MAGA movement as a fascist revolution, and ran out of time. So, I’m already planning for the next bi-weekly episode, for March 1st, which will continue out discussing on fascism, the rise of the right, and hopefully be able to focus on the creation of the economic pressures that enable fascism, whilst still allowing the neo-capitalist class to profit.

So, turn on! Tune in! And hang out, let’s talk about these important issues, what’s happening, and speak truth to power.
