What time of the end is he referring to in this passage? And why does this time of the end matter to us today? This sermon explores Daniel chapter 8 to demonstrate God's sovereign control over history and His faithfulness to preserve His people during times of evil. The preacher identifies the ram and goat as the Medo-Persian and Greek empires, respectively, and interprets the 'little horn' as Antiochus Epiphanes, who desecrated the temple for a period symbolized by three and a half years. This specific duration serves as a biblical metaphor indicating that suffering is only halfway through God's appointed time before restoration occurs. And yet Daniel is shown these things so that he and his people can be prepared for what is to come and comforted in the knowledge that the Lord is the one directing each and every scene of history. However appalled or overwhelmed we might be at the state of the world today, we too can be comforted in the same knowledge - the Lord is the one directing the days of our lives and the nations of the world. We too, in Christ, can be prepared and persevere in faith and 'rise up and go about the king's business,' trusting the God of gods and Lord of kings whose kingdom endures forever.
