Join us today as we begin our brand new study of the Doctrine and Covenants, beginning with the preface which is converted in D&C 1. We consider why the church is called the only true and living church and we review further historical information about this divine preface.

Casey Paul Griffiths: The Book of Mormon is an introduction to the saving doctrine of Christ; the Doctrine and Covenants includes this doctrine but in addition teaches the intricacies of the workings of God’s kingdom on the earth. President Ezra Taft Benson taught, “The Book of Mormon brings men to Christ. The Doctrine and Covenants brings men to Christ’s kingdom. The Book of Mormon is the ‘keystone’ of our religion, and the Doctrine and Covenants is the capstone, with continuing latter-day revelation” (“The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants,” Ensign, April 1987). The messages in the revelations are intended for all people, with the Lord making no exceptions to His declaration here. The Lord speaks of a work to spread the gospel, which will transcend even the realm of the dead.

Join us today as we begin our brand new study of the Doctrine and Covenants, beginning with the preface which is converted in D&C 1. We consider how the Lord calls us in our weakness and we reflect on how the Restoration is an ongoing process.

Elder Gary E Stevenson: You might be thinking that you are no one special, that you are not all-star material. But that is not true. Don’t you know that God has proclaimed, “The weak things of the world shall come forth and break down the mighty and strong ones”?

So, do you feel weak? insignificant? Congratulations, you just made the lineup!

Do you feel unimportant? inferior? You may be just who God needs.

Join us today as we begin our brand new study of the Doctrine and Covenants, beginning with the preface which is converted in D&C 1. We consider how the Lord is countering calamities today and we reflect on what those calamities are.

Elder Gary E Stevenson: How might you find this heavenly help, even as Moses did, and not be deceived or give in to temptation? A clear channel for divine assistance was reaffirmed in this dispensation by the Lord Himself when He declared: “Wherefore, I the Lord, knowing the calamity which should come upon the inhabitants of the earth, called upon my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., and spake unto him from heaven, and gave him commandments.” Using simpler words, we might say that the Lord, who knows “the end from the beginning,” knows the unique difficulties of our day. Therefore, He has provided a way for us to resist challenges and temptations, many of which come as a direct result of the deceitful influences of the adversary and his attacks.

Join us today as we begin our brand new study of the Doctrine and Covenants, beginning with the preface which is converted in D&C 1. We consider the invitation to repent and we reflect on the power of the Holy Ghost to correct us.

Richard G Scott: That scripture emphasizes that the Lord cannot abide sin but He will forgive the repentant sinner because of His perfect love. It also teaches that not only is it important to keep a commandment you have broken, but by obeying all of the commandments you will obtain additional power and support in the process of repentance.

Join us today as we begin our brand new study of the Doctrine and Covenants, beginning with the preface which is converted in D&C 1. We consider the importance of listening to the voice of the Lord and His servants and we reflect on our role in spreading the Gospel message.

Casey Paul Griffiths: In the closing words of the revelation, the Lord underlines one of the important themes of the Doctrine and Covenants. His servants, though imperfect men and women, are given the authority to act on His behalf and to carry His message to the nations. In a later revelation, the Lord teaches “he that receiveth my servants receiveth me” (Doctrine and Covenants 84:36). The revelation serves as a perfect opening to a volume of scripture containing the Lord’s words to the people in the latter days. The weakness of His servants will be evident, but also glory and power will be found whenever faithful men and women receive a call to act on behalf of God to bring about His purposes.

Join us today as we begin our brand new study of the Doctrine and Covenants, beginning with the preface which is converted in D&C 1. We consider why this book of revelations was published and we reflect on the miraculous circumstances that D&C 1 was given.

Saints: The three men began writing immediately, but when they returned with a preface, the council was unhappy with it. They read it over, picking it apart line by line, and asked Joseph to seek the Lord’s will on it. Joseph prayed, and the Lord revealed a new preface for the book. Sidney recorded His words as Joseph spoke them.

Neal A Maxwell: Serious study of the blessed Book of Mormon admits one to a wonder world of complexity and beauty, even in the midst of the book’s simple, but powerful, spiritual refrain. We are given that which we most need—yet we are athirst for more! Granted, whenever the words of heaven are filtered through mortal minds and tongues there is some diminution. Yet, as with Nephi of old, so it was with Joseph Smith: 'If ye shall believe in Christ ye will believe in these words, for they are the words of Christ, and he hath given them unto me.

Join us today as we celebrate and study the birth of our Saviour through the words of the Book of Mormon. We consider what this book teaches us about the results of the Saviour's sacrifice and we reflect on the perfect love of God to allow this.

Richard G Scott: By understanding the Atonement, you will see that God is not a jealous being who delights in persecuting those who misstep. He is an absolutely perfect, compassionate, understanding, patient, and forgiving Father. He is willing to entreat, counsel, strengthen, lift, and fortify. He so loves each of us that He was willing to have His perfect, sinless, absolutely obedient, totally righteous Son experience indescribable agony and pain and give Himself in sacrifice for all. Through that atonement we can live in a world where absolute justice reigns in its sphere so the world will have order. But that justice is tempered through mercy attainable by obedience to the teachings of Jesus Christ.”
