Educational Statement: Ivermectin in Human and Veterinary Medicine

Ivermectin is not exclusively a “human drug” or an “animal drug.” It is an antiparasitic medication used in both human and veterinary medicine. The active drug molecule—ivermectin—is the same compound, but the products, concentrations, formulations, approved uses and appropriate doses can be very different.

In human medicine, FDA-approved ivermectin tablets are used for certain parasitic infections, including intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis. Other human formulations are approved for certain topical conditions.

In veterinary medicine, ivermectin has been used for decades to prevent or treat specific parasites in animals.
