Welcome to a special Cinema Cinemetery Double Episode as we close out the 1980s and begin the 1990s with Driving Miss Daisy and Dances With Wolves. Here we'll be exploring two films which couldn't be more different; one exploring racial differences in the mid 20th century south and the other examing the plight of the Lakota Sioux on the American plains. Nevertheless, both movies combine 80s drama with 90s schmaltz for some interesting conversation.
Should these films be a part of your next double-header? Find out now!

“I don’t have my books, I’m going to be bookless”. 1988’s Rain Man tells the story of Charlie Babbit, a quasi-successful businessman looking to continue his string of high-risk, high-reward deals. When his estranged father passes, he initially thinks he’s hit the windfall, only to find nearly all inheritance has been sent to his long-lost brother Raymond. Raymond, an “autistic savant” in the film’s terms lives life in a facility, unable to interact with the world on his own. When Charlie decides to “kidnap” Raymond to gain leverage to regain his inheritance, a cross-country road trip begins. Part drama, part comedy, part Tom Cruise, and part Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man is a little bit of everything. Does lightning strike thrice for Mr. Hoffman? Find out here.

“The Emperor has been a prisoner in his own palace since the day that he was crowned, and has remained a prisoner since he abdicated. But now he's growing up, he may wonder why he's the only person in China who may not walk out of his own front door. I think the Emperor is the loneliest boy on Earth.” 1987’s The Last Emperor tells the tale of Pu Yi, the eponymous last emperor of China. Following his childhood, abdication, and eventual alignment with Imperial Japan to regain his power, the movie reveals some never-before-seen locations from China’s Forbidden City and a narrative as Shakespearean as it is historical. Does the Last Emperor continue the trend of solid epics, or does it fade into history with the rest? Find out…today!

“Looking back, we did not fight the enemy, we fought ourselves, and the enemy was in us.” Set in the thick of the Vietnam War, Platoon tells the tale of naive enlisted soldier Chris Taylor as he realizes the horrors of war both beyond, and within, the Platoon. A film in the spirit of The Deer Hunter and All Quiet on the Western Front, Oliver Stone’s winning film depicts a cinematic version of his own experience. As reason and madness wrestle for control, will the Platoon find itself in one piece, even if it survives the battle? Find out now:

“All I wanted was to sing to God. He gave me that longing... and then made me mute. Why? Tell me that.” Amadeus tells the tale of “dueling” composers Mozart and Salieri. As Salieri seeks to gain fame and glory with hard work and political gamesmanship, the former child prodigy Mozart eclipses him at every turn, while trying to avoid his own demons. This piece of historical fiction takes a dramatized look at the flawed but unforgettable work of Mozart, and the man who later calls himself his “murderer”. While Mozart’s music still lives on, does his movie deserve another look? Find out now!

Operator: I have an emergency phone call from Mrs. Aurora Greenway in Houston, Texas, for Mrs. Emma Horton.
- Sam Burns: Oh no!
- Emma Horton: No, she always does this when the lines busy. It's fine.”
Welcome to the dysfunctional relationship of Aurora and Emma. Terms of Endearment follows the relationship of a mother and daughter through marriage, moving, Jack Nicholson, and cancer. Starring just about everyone famous from the 70s and 90s, this film continues the 80s tradition of being a story about normal people having a rough day/week/year. Is Terms still endearing? Brigadier: You don't think we're just going to walk out of India!
Gandhi: Yes. In the end, you will walk out. Because 100,000 Englishmen simply cannot control 350 million Indians, if those Indians refuse to cooperate.
Cinema Cemetery is finally back after a brief summer hiatus. This week, join us as we follow the life of Mohandas Gandhi as he goes from a life as a simple attorney to a generational inspiration in his home country. This biopic epic by Richard Attenborough spans decades and dozens of challenges. Does the movie match the man and the legend? Find out now.

“If I can't win, I won't run! “If you won't run, you can't win”. Long before Michael Scott said Wayne Gretzky said you miss 100% of the shots you never take, there was Chariots of Fire. This 1981 Best Picture explores two competing runners in the lead-up to the 1924 Olympics as they struggle with everything from form and faith to religion and regulations. As Harold Abrahams struggles to navigate being Jewish in the early 20th century England, all while training professionally in an age that only respects amateurism, Rev. Eric Liddell debates whether to serve God from the pulpit, or on the track. An odd mix of 1980s music and diegetic hymns, this true tale depicts not only a lot of slow-motion running but the story behind the racers as well. Does Chariots of Fire still deserve Gold? Find out now!

“Maybe you were stronger. Have you ever considered that? That maybe you were the stronger one?” While main character may have been stronger, this movie is just Ordinary. Ordinary People that is. This 1980 film tells the tell of a family coping with the loss of a child, as the parents and brother react in vastly different ways. Featuring against-type performances from Mary Tyler Moore and Judd Hirsch, and co-starring Donald Sutherland while introducing Timothy Hutton, this unassuming movie took the awards by storm to start the decade. Does the movie stand out over 40 years later, or has it just become Ordinary? Find out this week on Cinema Cemetery
