In 2008 legendary and innovative animation studio Pixar struck gold once again with their sci-fi adventure film, Wall-E. In the future, planet Earth is screwed thanks to a climate disaster (luckily that will never happen in real-life RIGHT?!) meaning the remaining humans must retreat into space, and leave behind cute Wall-E robots to pick up their rubbish. But after our hero meets EVE and evidence of life sustaining itself again is found, the wheels are in motion for the future of the human race to change forever. The movie features incredibly charming animation and detailed sound, which contribute greatly to the filmmakers vision of crafting an engaging family story with little dialogue. It's timeless quality no doubt means it is going to continue to be looked upon very fondly in the years to come... Possibly even after we're all living in a spaceship following Earth's desolation.

Cinema Effect is back for our third season! And there's no better way to kick off 2022 than by returning to the first franchise we ever reviewed, and discussing the brand new Matrix film, The Matrix Resurrections (NOT Reloaded). It's time to go back to The Matrix, and once again feel really confused about what's happening in the first act. Is Neo still alive? Was the original trilogy just a series of video games? Why were returning characters recast? The mystery presented is pretty cool... until the veil is lifted. Let's definitively determine if this is a return to form, or another dud for the series.

As the second season of Cinema Effect comes to an end, it is time to reflect on the year that was for film and TV, as well as our our own podcast. 2021 saw a number of high profile and quality releases. It is the final review of the year, and it seems only feels fitting for Zac and Liam to discuss what was one of their most anticipated movies, Sopranos prequel The Many Saints Of Newark. There were plenty of reasons to look forward to the film. For the first time in 15 years there is finally new content based on the show. It comes to us from The Sopranos' creator David Chase. We get to witness the long talked about tale of Dickie Moltisanti, and the role he played in the upbringing of legendary mob boss Tony Soprano. And to top it all off, Michael Gandolfi gets the opportunity to play the same role which made his dad a superstar, as he brings a younger Tony to life. But with all of that initial optimism out of the way, did the final product have the makings of a Varsity athlete? Grab some Gabagool, and take a listen.

Denis Villeneuve's long anticipated adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune is finally here... and we've actually seen it! The film's scale is huge, both visually and in plot. But essentially Paul Atreides and his cool family move to the desert planet Arrakis, one of the most deadly and valuable worlds in the universe. It is there they face many threats including the emperor of the galaxy, a flying obese man, and giant sandworms!! We'll breakdown this epic in-depth and ponder the future of this series. But if for some reason you're hesitant to hit play you must remember, fear is the mind-killer.

Witness the end of the legendary Raimi trilogy! Tobey Maguire delivers his final (for now) and most absurd performance as Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3. This time around Spidey must deal with new threats in the Sandman, and an alien Symbiote which landed on Earth coincidentally two feet away from him. Also, James Franco randomly gets amnesia. Needless to say there's a lot going on in this movie. We had to restrain ourselves from making this episode an hour-long breakdown of the Bully Maguire dance sequences. But let's laugh about the film's many hilarious scenes and debate its other contentious moments.

Whether we like it or not, Doug Liman has now become a friend of the show as we review his 2014 sci-fi blockbuster Edge Of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise tries to convince us he's not an action badass as he plays Cage, a regular dude thrust into the front lines of an alien invasion and inadvertently gifted the ability to reset the day upon death. From there he must enlist the help of Emily Blunt to video game his way through the situation and destroy the alien Mimics. This Groundhog Day concept implemented into the large scale action creates a lot of fun moments, and it's great to see the film make the most of it's premise creatively. Released in 2006, the film sees rival 19th century magicians played by Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, engage in a years long rivalry. This movie ingeniously unfolds as a magic trick in itself to the audience. Its amazing structure and editing disguises the truth behind the tense conflict engulfing the characters' lives, as well as a number of exciting twists. But before you start listening you must ask yourself one simple question... Are you watching closely?

Studio Ghibli is no doubt a legendary force in the history of animated filmmaking, regardless of how you wish to pronounce their name. That's why it's so exciting to review Miyazaki's 1997 classic, Princess Mononoke. Ashitaka is our lone protagonist cursed by a demon and subsequently banished by his tribe. Accompanied by his amazing red Elk Yakul, he must embark on a quest to stop the conflict brewing between an increasingly ambitious mining colony and the neighbouring forest spirits, all while looking to cure his condition. We found a great appreciation for the movie's hand-drawn animation (duh), score, presentation of themes, and charming characters.
