After another disastrous box office update, The Flash has broken the most unwanted DCEU record, as well as potentially taking a painful comic book movie record in the process. Having debuted with a $55 million domestic haul against higher projections (and much higher hopes), The Flash is being called a legitimate box office flop, adding a sour note to the end of the DCEU. Why The Flash flopped so badly is a matter for debate, but it's a reality Warner Bros are now starring at.

In this episode of Flashback Friday, we delve into the 2015 film "Blackhat" directed by Michael Mann. The film revolves around a devastating hack on a Chinese nuclear power station and the subsequent cyber assault on the stock market. Computer genius Hathaway, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, is enlisted to track down the culprit and teams up with the FBI and Chinese cyber experts. As we analyze Mann's direction, we uncover the strengths and weaknesses of "Blackhat."

Mann's signature style brings a seductive air to the world of hacking, with captivating visuals and intense action sequences. We explore the film's gripping gun battles, explosive moments, and Mann's ability to create chaos with clarity. However, while the action excels, the film falls short in its dialogue and character development. The romance between Hathaway and Wei Tang's character lacks chemistry, and Hemsworth's performance as the ultra-masculine genius lacks emotional depth.

Viola Davis stands out in the supporting cast, injecting purpose and edge into her character. We discuss how the film could have benefited from Davis in the lead role. Mann's focus on the industrial setting and sound design creates an oppressive atmosphere, but occasional issues with dialogue volume and synchronization hint at rushed production.

Despite its flaws, "Blackhat" remains an entertaining genre film when taken in isolation. We examine its poker-faced tone and missed opportunities to explore the implications of hacking and cyber threats. While the film falls short of Mann's best work, his direction is commendable. Ultimately, "Blackhat" is cautiously recommended for its thrilling moments and Mann's distinctive style, even though it doesn't reach the level of a post-millennial masterpiece like "Heat 2.0."

Join us as we revisit "Blackhat" and delve into its strengths, weaknesses, and its place in Michael Mann's filmography.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened to the second-best Thursday “preview” ever for an animated film with $17.35 million. Only Incredibles 2 did better with $18.5 million. (The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened on a Wednesday and did not have previews.) That $17 million is folded into what became the best opening day of 2023 with $51.7 million, beating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s $48.1 million. (Again, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has the best Friday of the year with $54.8 million, its third day of release.) Spider-Man’s Thursday and Friday led to a opening weekend of $120.5 million for the Spider-Verse, putting it in league with some of the most boosted sequel events we have seen in the past 40 years. The 2018 film opened in December to just $35.3 million and went on to gross $190.2 million. That is a 341% increase from the first film.

In this "Flashback Friday" episode, we're jumping back into the action-packed, day-glo world of the groundbreaking movie, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse". We take a deep dive into the story of Miles Morales, a Brooklyn teen turned unexpected superhero, voiced by the charismatic Shameik Moore. We marvel at the playful screenplay, vibrant animation, and energetic voice cast that inject new life into this classic superhero tale.

We explore how the film beautifully subverts and celebrates Spider-Man mythology, bringing fresh perspectives to the teenage anxiety associated with superpowers and the famous "responsibility" that comes with them. We discuss the standout performances, especially Moore's, who offers perhaps the most likable portrayal of any Spider-Man alter-ego to date.

Don't miss our conversation about Jake Johnson's aging Peter Parker, who provides comic relief while reflecting an older audience demographic. We also delve into the introduction of various Spider-Men from alternate dimensions, and how Miles' story remains clear and compelling amid the multiverse madness.

Our episode wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the humanity grounding the film. We discuss Brian Tyree Henry's warm portrayal as Miles' father and Lily Tomlin's scene-stealing Aunt May. Plus, we delve into Spider-Man's rogue gallery, with a special focus on Wilson Fisk's character.

Lastly, we rave about the film's innovative use of animation and its impact on storytelling, proving that a shared universe of dozens of films isn't required for a compelling narrative. Stay tuned as we marvel at the film's balance of action, story, humor, and how Miles Morales' transformation into Spider-Man stands as one of the most memorable moments in Spider-Man's big-screen history.

Join us on this flashback journey as we revisit this spectacular film and celebrate the arrival of Miles Morales into the big time. So grab your web-slingers and prepare for a wild ride Into the Spider-Verse!

Fast X, the 10th installment in the long-running (and increasingly ludicrous) action franchise, is eyeing a top place finish in its debut weekend at the domestic box office. Directed by Louis Leterrier, Fast X grossed $28 million on its first day of release, including $7.5 million from Thursday previews. This puts it on track to gross around $67 million in its opening weekend, which will be slightly under F9: The Fast Saga’s debut a couple of years ago.
