Season 6 became a clumsy, misguided experiment in fakery. Pointless audience manipulation bordering, almost, on audience contempt. Of course, Glenn's giant non-death became a huge point of contention for both critics and fans in the fall when, all of a sudden, the show wanted us to believe, through purposefully deceitful camera placement, that one of the main characters had died halfway through a random episode.

Here’s what’s so awesome about Looper: It’s a futuristic time-travel movie in which more or less the entire last hour takes place on a farm. And that’s just one of the many ways writer-director Rian Johnson subverts expectations. This is a “you know what would be cool?” movie that considers the real-world ramifications of its science-fiction whiz-bang, and a film of ideas that doesn’t skimp on the action. Most of all, Looper asks questions about whether a man’s destiny is locked into place—not because the future has already been written, but because of the kind of person he is.

I'm here in both defense and condemnation of The Walking Dead's seasonal format. In the "pros" columns, I like the eight and eight split. It allows for, essentially, two separate, compact stories to be told. With even a chance for splits among the respective half seasons. As in, the first half of Season 5 involved the cannibals and the cops. The back half involved the open road and Alexandria.
So the fragmentation allows us to actually separate, more easily, the stuff we like from the stuff we don't. I can say, of the first eight Season 5 episodes "I enjoyed the Terminus escape and the cannibal stuff, but not so much on the whole Atlanta hospital storyline." We can compartmentalize.
So, gather your fellow survivors and tune in for an in-depth review of The Walking Dead Season 5, where the stakes are higher, the enemies are more ruthless, and the walkers are more gruesome than ever before.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic's The Super Mario Bros. Movie's most definitely crushed it in its opening weekend – but its remarkable success is not just being limited to what can be written off as a front-loaded start. While all of the biggest hits of the year thus far have all dealt with a weekend-to-weekend drop over over 50 percent following their debuts, the Nintendo feature has broken from that pattern.

Since the return of movie-going after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down cinemas worldwide, a big problem facing blockbusters has been a repeating pattern of big openings followed by big drops – a result of the shrinking window between theatrical release and streaming/home video debut. The films released by Marvel Studios, for example, have made headlines because of their weekend-to-weekend issues since 2021 (Peyton Reed's Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania falling 70 percent earlier this year), but The Super Mario Bros. Movie has impressed by only dropping 41 percent compared to the numbers from its first Friday-to-Sunday.

I suspect that some of the initial fun of the show was playing the “I judge how you do your zombie apocalypse” game. Meaning, putting yourself in the position of the survivor and assessing how you would respond to the challenges – or how you imagine you would – versus how the characters do. The Walking Dead game serves to test our individual decision making abilities now, and assessing the choices that the characters make on the series has often merged with judging how the characters are handled by the creators.
This brings us to what is, for me, one of the most intriguing by-products of this series’ success and a genuine head scratcher: The audience reaction. I truly don’t believe I’ve seen a show inspire the kind of diametrically opposed - and often vitriolic - response that this one does. The intensity of the love or, on the other side of the spectrum, hate for The Walking Dead continues to amaze and befuddle me. I suppose there’s a contingent of the fandom that were comic readers and, as such, feel a personal connection to the characters and an investment in how they are depicted. Others may have been elated to see a television take on zombies.

In this episode of Box Office Buzz, we discuss the surprising box office performance of Universal Pictures' new horror-comedy Cocaine Bear, which surpassed Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in its opening weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cocaine Bear earned $8.7 million on its first Friday, while Quantumania earned $8.3 million on the same day. The film is now projected to earn an estimated $21.21 million at the domestic box office, which is ahead of expectations.
We also discuss the underwhelming second-weekend performance of Quantumania, which is projected to earn over $30 million domestically in its second weekend, a 71.6% drop from its debut box office earnings. This would be the worst second-weekend drop for a superhero film that opened to over $100 million. We compare this drop to other superhero films, such as DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder.

In this episode of The Cinema Gold Show, we take a look at the absurd yet surprisingly well-made movie, Cocaine Bear. Based on a real-life incident where an American black bear ingested 75 pounds of cocaine and died, the movie imagines a scenario where the bear lives and goes on a killing spree, hunting down more cocaine. While the concept may seem stupid, the movie works well as a horror-comedy that's both very funny and very violent. We discuss how the horror and comedy themes work well together and how the writing is weird and absurdist, reminiscent of parodies like Wet Hot American Summer or Tucker and Dale vs Evil.
