  • The Green Mile (1999)

This week we explore Frank Darabont's sophomore feature The Green Mile (1999). As a follow up to the classic and beloved The Shawshank Redemption (1994), The Green Mile is more bleak, longer, and certainly more gruesome. However, it was an immediate box office success, and has stood the test of time as a beloved classic. Enjoy our review of this death row classic.

  • Nouvelle Vague (2025)

Bringing our show back to its very first episode, we take a look at Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague (2025), a movie about the making of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960). Spoiler Alert: he makes Breathless by the end. We also do quite a bit of dilly-dallying to start off the show, so if you just want our thoughts about the film skip to 53 minutes. But everything before that is true art, the essence of cinema.

  • Tron: Legacy (2010)

One could say that Tron: Legacy (2010) is a polarizing film. If you were born at a certain time, it’s legendary Daft Punk score and slick visuals are probably pretty nostalgic for you. If you were older, and especially if you were a fan of the original, Tron: Legacy (2010) likely felt like a cash grab. For us, it seems this was a film that left an impact on our journeys into loving movies, and it undoubtedly has left a cultural impact. Enjoy our review of the classic debut film of Joseph Kosinski, Tron: Legacy (2010).

  • The Vast of Night (2019)

Closing out our spooky month, we’re taking a look at The Vast of Night (2019). A small town in New Mexico starts hearing some disturbances in the night, and two young teens investigate where they might be coming from. The film is more Twilight Zone than Saw, but it certainly makes you think about what goes bump in the night. It’s the debut film of Andrew Patterson, starring Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz. Enjoy this review of The Vast of Night (2019).

  • Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990)

This week we’re exploring the often forgotten genre that is “Horror Movies for Children”. It was a short lived genre, and almost entirely killed by the advent of the PG-13 rating, but this week we dive into Gremlins (1984) and its wacky sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). Gremlins is certainly responsible for traumatizing a generation of 80’s children whose parents thought it was a silly movie about a little furry animal. Enjoy our review of the Gremlins franchise!

About Cinema Spectator

From the publisher's feed

An ECFS Productions Original Podcast: Cinema Spectator is a film history podcast that takes away the pretense that usually comes along with learning about film. Each week, we tackle the "cinematic canon" to see how films hold up for a modern audience. Can legendary pictures entertain a casual who grew up on Spider-Man reboots and Jim Carrey movies, or will they forever be relics of a bygone era? Are they only for cinema loyalists?
