Akira Kurosawa's High and Low (1963) is a film that is as instructive as it is entertaining. It’s a classic police procedural that flexes Kurosawa’s directorial prowess, especially in its staging and blocking. The film keeps its tense atmosphere throughout and pays off with an excellent conclusion. Enjoy our review of the original High and Low (1963).

Wrapping up our discussion of Spike Lee, 25th Hour (2002) is a contemplative and personal movie about regret. It’s a film that focuses on the sinking pit in your stomach when you know something will never be the same. It is an emotional examination of loss, and it wades through the feelings of each of the characters. Starring Edward Norton and Philip Seymour Hoffman, join us for one last Spike Lee Joint.

Continuing our discussion of Spike Lee, we discuss one of his most ambitious and impactful films of his career. Spike Lee explores the life of civil rights leader Malcolm X, both as a complicated and revered figure. Denzel Washington shines in one of his greatest roles and Spike Lee's style leaves its fingerprints all over this film.

Inside Man has a star studded cast, a twist-filled script, and a director in his prime. It's probably not as important as a movie like Do the Right Thing, but it sure is a fun time! Enjoy our review of Spike Lee's Inside Man (2006).

Do the Right Thing (1989) is a true classic of American cinema, capturing New York in the 1980s and the racial tensions of the time. Not only does it capture the time and place, its messages echo into modern times. We thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this movie so please enjoy our discussion of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing.

Live from New York City, Cameron and Juzo review two recent releases in this extra long episode. Weapons (2025) is the latest film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. Weapons is a thrilling horror movie about a class of children that suddenly go missing. It has twists, turns, and well written and realized characters.
Starting at 1 hour 59 minutes we also review Highest 2 Lowest (2025), Spike Lee's newest feature film. A remake of Akira Kurosawa's High and Low (1963), Highest 2 Lowest is the first collaboration between Spike Lee and Denzel Washington since Inside Man (2006). The reunion was highly anticipated, but certainly left us scratching our heads at times. Enjoy this double feature episode!

It’s been a long time coming for this show, but JFK (1991) is a cult classic in every sense of the term. With a star studded cast, a frenetic pace, incredible editing and a more than loose grip on reality, the film is truly a special one. Enjoy this review of Oliver Stone’s crackpot feature!

Eddington (2025) is the latest film from the ever-evolving mind of Ari Aster, one of the most beloved new horror directors of the past decade. While Aster has evolved away from horror in his latest two features, he still has a knack for tackling bold and challenging themes in his films. Eddington will certainly scare off some audiences for its close proximity to recent events, but this podcast certainly has much to say about it.

An ECFS Productions Original Podcast: Cinema Spectator is a film history podcast that takes away the pretense that usually comes along with learning about film. Each week, we tackle the "cinematic canon" to see how films hold up for a modern audience. Can legendary pictures entertain a casual who grew up on Spider-Man reboots and Jim Carrey movies, or will they forever be relics of a bygone era? Are they only for cinema loyalists?
