  • Don't Look Up (2021) *spoilers

For the new year, we will take a look at some of the most acclaimed movies of 2022.  This starts with Adam McKay’s broad satire, Don’t Look Up.  Sean and Travis really enjoyed, while I was more on the fence.

As for vino, I decided on an old standby:  Domaine de Salvard’s Cheverny.  As Up looks at the end of the world, it made sense to pick something I would want to drink for the end times.  I love French reds, and this Gamay/Pinot Noir blend is meant to be enjoyed now.  That makes this bottle perfect for this deep impact.

Kick back, and enjoy another fine episode of Cinemavino!

  • Hawkeye

Hawkeye, Marvel’s latest series on Disney+, was a surprisingly strong take on the Avengers’ weakest link.  Too often, heavy-hitters like Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America take center-stage, while Clint Barton ends up as a supporting player.  This series finally fills a few key elements of the Hawkeye backstory, while also adding some important new characters to Phase Four.  Hailee Steinfeld makes an especially strong impression as Kate Bishop, Barton’s new protege.

For this side-pod, we discuss our feelings on Hawkeye‘s six-episode run.  Once again, SPOILERS ABOUND, so proceed with caution.

As for wine, we enjoyed a little Bow and Arrow Pinot Noir.  It’s a bright, cherry-flavored burst of easy-drinking red wine.  Pinot Noirs stand alongside Gamay as some of the most binge-friendly reds out there.

  • Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Happy New Year from all of us at Cinemavino!  Here’s to the hope that 2022 will improve on 2021’s dire situation.  On the movie front, only a few movies take place on or around NYE, but we’ve found a bona fide 90s classic:  Sleepless in Seattle.  This Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan rom-com was a huge hit back in 1993.  Personally, I haven’t seen it since the days of VHS, so this watch was…illuminating.

I’ll be blunt:  This movie did not age well, and it was great to hear the other guys independently agree with me.  In fact, Seattle holds up as poorly as anything we’ve screen so far for this podcast.

For this week’s vino, we drink a little Bow and Arrow Pinot Noir, as it jives with our upcoming Hawkeye podcast.  We also down some Ercole Bianco from Italy.  It’s a delicious, easy-drinking white that comes in a convenient, budget-minded 1.0L size. I haven’t featured a white from Italy all year, so this is just a case of better late than never.  To learn a little more, click here.

If you want to read my full review of Sleepless, head this way.

Now, enjoy another fine episode of Cinemavino.  After Hawkeye, we’ll kick off another fine run of under-watched movies.

  • Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) *spoilers

It’s totally appropriate that the biggest Spider-flick leads to the biggest episode of Cinemavino ever!  For over one hour, we discuss Spider-Man: No Way Home, the latest and greatest MCU movie made.  We have strong opinions, and almost all of them are fascinating.

I’ll say it right here:  SPOILERS ABOUND!  If you haven’t seen this awesome superhero epic, slap on a COVID mask and head to theater.  Then, get right back in here!

To read my written review, click here!

For vino, we tried the holiday-friendly Rosé of Pinot Grigio from Barnard Griffin. If you’re looking for something in the $15 range to have with ham, turkey, dressing, etc., this might be exactly what you need.

Now, kick back and enjoy our look at Spider-Man: No Way Home, the biggest and baddest episode of Cinemavino yet!

  • Die Hard 2 (1990)

The debate about whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie should be deader than disco.  It is, and it always has been.  If anything, this Bruce Willis classic is a delightful piece of counter-programming to the sticky fluff we have to deal with this time of year.  34th Street can keep its miracles, and Jimmy Stewart can live his wonderful life somewhere else.  Give me John McClane squishing Euro-villains with vague accents any day of the week.

That argument goes ditto for Die Hard 2: Die Harder.  Yes, the poster actually says Die Harder.  Our favorite movie cop finds himself “up to his ass in terrorists, again.”  And on Christmas Day, no less!  This time, it’s at an airport, where a bunch of bad guys threaten to crash a whole lotta airliners.  While this movie ain’t quite as much fun as the original, it’s still a fairly enjoyable affair.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Cinemavino as much as we enjoyed recording it!  Next, tune in for our analysis of Spider-Man: No Way Home!

  • The Holiday (2006)

We’re gonna kick off this season with a series of very different Christmas flicks.  That begins with The Holiday, a prototypical offering of Hollywood schmaltz.  It was written and directed by Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give), who has a strong command of frothy rom-coms.  In fact, she might be the best this side of the late, great Nora Ephron, who directed our upcoming NYE offering, Sleepless in Seattle.

For this week’s vino, we went with Barter and Trade’s Merlot, as it fits with the movie’s theme of house swapping.  This is a nice, full-bodied Merlot that’s still fairly fruit-forward and easy to drink.  Merlot is an extremely underrated wine, and it’s perfect for cozying up to a fireplace with a good book or movie.

My written review of The Holiday is coming, and you’ll be able to click here to read it.

  • Guilty Pleasure Movies (The Brian Dennehy Special)

With that in mind, this week Trav and I go over our guilty pleasure movies.  To pair with it, I came up with a decadent concoction called Chocolate Sangria.  To make it, start with two parts Chocovine–a cordial-type blend of red wine and milk chocolate–and dump in a shot of Pinnacle Whipped Vodka.  Top it off with one part milk and a little Hershey’s syrup.  You can warm up the milk and make it Hot Chocolate Sangria, or cool it down with some ice for a milkshake texture.  Need a garnish?  Try a few marshmallows.  It’s mega-rich, but that’s what guilty pleasures are supposed to be.

You can learn a little more right here.

After a couple rounds of chocolate goodness, we switch gears–somewhat–with a delicious 75 Minute IPA from the good folks at Dogfish Head Brewery.  It’s a tasty beverage brewed with maple syrup.  Anyway, get in there and enjoy our latest podcast!  I’m outtie.
