  • Superbad (2007)

Our Valentine’s/date movie spectacular continues with Superbad!  To be fair, as Sean says, this film is more “com” than “rom,” but it’s definitely a hilarious classic, and perfect to share with a partner for a romantic evening.

To pair with this 2000s comedy masterpiece, we drink Naveran, a little grower Cava from Spain.  Spain is a huge producer of sparkling wine, so it seemed appropriate for this Valentine’s Day series.  This one had combined flavors of limestone, anis, and fresh hay to make for a perfect bubbly to drink with such a fun movie.  Plus, it clocks in around $20, if you’re on a tighter budget this year.

Next up, we take a look at a much heavier romantic film, City of Angels!

  • Long Shot (2019)

This week’s episode continues our February date movie spectacular.  We take a good look at Long Shot, a 2019 rom-com that stars Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron.  It’s a flip of My Fair Lady/Pygmalion/She’s All That, with Rogen as the frumpy swan.  I watched on actual date night with my wife, and was pretty impressed!

Our next date flick goes way more com than rom with the 2000s classic, Superbad.

  • As Good as It Gets (1997)

With this episode, we kick off our Valentine’s Month of date movies.  As Good as It Gets is an odd hybrid of rom-com, character study, and conventional drama that examines a few themes that were (for 1997) ahead of their time.  Jack Nicholson’s character is anti-Semitic, misogynistic, homophobic, bigoted, and…well, every other terrible word you can summon.  Writer-director James L. Brooks takes an unflinching look at his protagonist’s terrible views, thus inviting real conversation about these issues.  Some of this film holds up; a lot of it doesn’t.

All this month, we’re gonna drink some bubbly.  Two bottles will be affordable, while the other two will be splurge-worthy.  We’ll kick off with the former category:

The Brut Rosé from Gérard Betrand retails for around $20, but it tastes more expensive.  Dry, lean, and lightly fruity, this blush bubbly is a perfect, easy-drinking date night wine.  It won’t overwhelm desert, but you could also serve it for pre-dinner drinks.  If you’re looking something fun and festive, but not bonkers expensive, this bottle is a great way to go.

  • The Book of Boba Fett, Episodes 4&5 *spoilers

We continue our look at The Book of Boba Fett, now streaming Disney+.  Here, we cover episodes 4 & 5.  One is a filler, the other is a killer.  We’ll let you figure out which is which.  SPOILERS ABOUND!  Proceed with caution.

For vino, we sample Chateau Greysac, a classic Merlot-based Bordeaux that will pair nicely with either a full meal or a good date movie.

Next, we kick off our Valentine’s Day series with As Good as It Gets.

  • The Legend of Vox Machina (Episodes 1-3) *spoilers

For this mini-episode of Cinemavino, we take a look at the first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina, now streaming on Amazon Prime.  This animated series is based on the Youtube hit Critical Role, and is the result of a record-shattering Kickstarter campaign.  Travis is a rabid fan, the rest of us are noobs of varying degrees. We all have strong opinions.  SPOILERS ABOUND!  Proceed with caution.

Next up:  We’ll take a look at the last two episodes of The Book of Boba Fett.  Then, we’ll start our Valentine’s Day series with As Good as It Gets.  Enjoy!

  • The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

This week, we continue our look at Oscar contenders with Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth.  It’s a refreshing, well-made take on Shakespeare’s warhorse.  We enjoyed it, to varying degrees.

For vino, we went with the 1000 Stories Red Zinfandel.  It’s a full-bodied red that benefits from being aged in a Bourbon barrel.  This gives the wine a rich, oaky, toasty flavor that makes it the perfect pair with a cold, wintry evening.  Plus, it’s less than $20.  Try a bottle and see if it doesn’t warm you right up!

  • Being the Ricardos (2021)

For this week’s Cinemavino, we begin our look at eventual Oscar nominees.  Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos is an excellent look at a fateful week in the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

To pair with this great wine, I chose the Lenore Syrah from Washington.

It’s lightly spicy, with notes of pepper and dried fruit.  Even better, it’s less than $20–perfect for a streaming movie.

Next, we’ll take another mini look at The Book of Boba Fett.  After that, Denzel Washington and Joel Cohen tackle some heavy Shakespeare.
