But what most drove the anti-sexual sexualizing of Mary Magdalene was the male need to dominate women. That need is being met all over the church and all over the world and the United States. I think we should be the next church that goes right back to Jesus acting in partnership as women and men called to be agents of transformation, brothers and sisters in Christ.

Following Jesus is not about “being happy because everything is okay even when it is seriously not.” The hope of Psalm 43 is a defiant declaration that something will change. We need a prejudice toward seeing the good because seeing the bad is easy. Finding ways to praise in the midst of feeling downcast is the essence of a day like Thanksgiving. Take yourself out of the center of the action for a moment and receive. Become the object of Someone, rather than the subject of everything. Aren’t you glad you aren’t in charge of the universe?

About Talk: Ascribe means “give it up.” We automatically ascribe what we see to something, but it is not always conscious. Psalm 29 sees the power of a storm and whispers “Glory.” We might not have access to the same awe the psalmist sees in creation because in the 21st century we are prone to ascribe things to ourselves and humanity’s collective understanding (which is a LOT!) Instead of forgetting the awe, we can get into the science and find a place for hushed reverence a little deeper down. Giving God the glory is a way of seeing the world that brings strength and peace.
