About Talk: Many of us are conditioned to please others to find our worth. Our culture does this fairly consistently for women, but our families of origin each have their own power over how we relate to ourselves and our desires. Selfishness cannot be countered by self-loathing. We must become who we are in Christ by getting connected to a deeper sense of our own giftedness and needs. Gwen developed a working definition of “good selfishness” (though she still objects to the title). It is the courage to prioritize ourselves in order to restore our resources the ability to state our needs forthrightly with self-awareness, that is, to state our needs without attempting to coerce others. Good selfishness is actually the effort to serve others more deeply, in a committed way over the long term.
