About Talk: Henri Nouwen and Paul (Romans 8:18-21) suggest that we are part of a larger body in Christ. We are not only bound with each other but all of Creation! We all go through cycles some good, great, and not so great, but we are moving together. To remain deeply connected together with Jesus, we consider what is around us, things that are alive that we see everyday. What are we tending to on a daily basis? Remaining deeply takes effort. We move ever so slightly toward each other and to our place to be changed. There is a sweet balance when considering the effort necessary to start the momentum and the ease of riding it out! When there’s resistance in the ride out you lose momentum. Effort and ease or cultivation and wildness are not opposites but partners! Look for the cycles and spirals that surround us and be encouraged that we are not alone. We have the mountains, the yarrow and the waters with us! Most of all lean into the body of all creation, especially when it feels like too much effort. We are in this together with God.

About Talk: I think we see the painful consequences around us of not loving our neighbors. We can see families being torn apart, people not being welcomed and included. The political climate we find ourselves in, and we have for a long time, is not one that honors the moral of the Good Samaritan story. Jesus is plain about what it means to move into the age to come: love God, love your neighbors. But we too often don’t see that around us. We are taught to fear each other, and certainly fear those who are different; that’s why so many people can turn a blind eye to a person in seeking asylum and refuge, or even turn a blind eye to families being torn apart. We aren’t really accustomed to being good neighbors, left to the teaching of our public leadership. But we have another idea. The entire Gospel of Luke, and the whole New Testament, is about bringing people together. It’s about loving people who are different than us, as if they weren’t.
