About Talk: Doubt and Faith are not opposites. They are twins. Tennyson said. “There is more faith in honest doubt than in half the creeds.” Doubt is a helper to faith, not something to be ignored. We deal with them together in a part of ourselves that is much less conscious than we realize. Jesus knows this and he entered into our experience of doubt. He had a full human experience. He knows what the darkness looks like and how it feels, even inside of his own person. In Matthew 27:46 he asks a very doubting question, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” We don’t have to pretty this up with theological backflips and biblical references. We can let Jesus join us in our humanity even in our doubt. His faithfulness as demonstrated in his death, and God’s faithfulness to lift him up out of death is a gift to us now too.
