Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • Tomorrow, not now
Venetian recording from Fondamenta Savorgnan reimagined by John Savarese.

"The field recording is a soundwalk through Venice, starting (I gather) around the Ponte della Crea and moving southeast along the Cannaregio, past a school.

"I wanted to keep the soundwalk intact, and scored it by following some of the main sounds: boat noise, voices, waves, a howling dog."

  • Daily life on Fondamenta Savorgnan
As part of a day of field recording in Venice, we explored some of lesser-walked (by tourists) parts of the city to examine daily life as it's lived by Venetians.

In this recording, you can hear school classes being taught as we walk past the windows of classrooms, teenagers leaving class and chatting by the side of the canal, and machine/work boats passing back and forth. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • WaveWorks
Hungarian beach reimagined by Andrew Tulloch.

"When I initially chose the sound, I envisaged making a melodic summery piece which would float over the recording, but in the end it turned out rather darker sounding.

"The quiet droning boat sound in the background provides an interesting counterpoint to the natural wave sounds, and put me in mind of the Danube's history of trade. The overall character of the piece is intended to reflect the river's nature/industry duality.

"The original recording is used throughout, mildly processed, as well as a synth sound made from the boat noise, and drum sounds built out of wave snippets. I liked the one piece of recognisable human voice (laugh?), and it ended up becoming a filtered rhythmic loop. Additional sounds included some soft synths, and improvised guitar/ebow notes."

  • Costa Crossing
Costa Rican beach reimagined by Sherman and Field.

"This piece utilises the original field recording in full. In accompaniment is a field recording taken early one morning of local bird life shortly after moving in to our new home, and a section of an improvised piece utilising guitar, electronic drum machine and other devices.

"The name is a hybrid of Costa Rica capturing the original recording, and Sadliers Crossing, where we live and captured the other components of the piece.

"Our approach is one of minimal interference and production to the original  recordings."

  • Get Lucky in Santiago
Outside La Moneda palace in Santiago, the site of so much of Chile's recent history, and tuning in to the ceremonial changing of the guard - with a modern twist, as the accompanying military band breaks into a cover of "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk for the tourists.

    Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • To the stars
Santiago military band reimagined by David Dasinger.

"I wanted to focus on the phrase "to the stars" from the lyrics and give the recording a more ethereal  feeling, a soundtrack for drifting through space and time. I extracted sections of the original recording and used PaulXStretch to sculpt the sound while retaining the essence of the tune."

  • Shama above Manoa Cliff Trail
"Melodic Malaysian shama, along with other birds and insects, can be heard. The wind kicks up and starts bamboo clacking on the hillside." Recorded by Gretchen Jude.
