  • 3454: Glass factory
Murano glass-making tour reimagined by The Leaf Library.

"It's made entirely from the field recording - nothing else (bar a bit of reverb and delay here and there). A bit of background - a friend of mine works with glass and has an old factory in Walthamstow where I've enjoyed hanging out now and then. He's a big fan of the German school of dub techno (as am I) and I wanted to make a track for him."

Produced and mixed by Matt AshtonMastered by Mike Cranny

  • 3453: A glass-making demonstration in Murano
Murano is world-famous for its glass-making master craftsmen, a centuries-old tradition of hand-blown and hand-shaped glass passed down through generations. Many glass factories do demonstrations of their craft, but this one is far more interesting, taking us into the actual workshop to see whatever happens to be going on at the time. Here you can hear our tour guide describing the glass-making process through various stages, while, more interestingly, you can hear the sound of the furnace, blowtorch and the craftsman moulding a new glass object (in this case, a rather lovely bird) with hammer and tongs. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 3452: Weather Room, Bidston Observatory
At an artistic research centre in Bidston Observatory, focused on social proximity as a facilitating tool for creative expression, which has understandably faced a difficult adaptation throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Recorded by Thomas Lye, October 2020. Part of the #StayHomeSounds project.

  • 3450: Sound of the forest above Lerici
The sound of the forest above Lerici, near the water source of Redarca. The birds living within the forest are the imperial crow (Corvus corax), the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), the Sardinian warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), the blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) and the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis). On spot there are oak trees and acacia trees of more than 200 years.

    Recorded by Mattia Confalonieri.

  • 3451: Foresta degli Uccelli
Lerici forest reimagined by Richard Watts.

"I have tried to reproduce the feeling of the original field recording using various bell sounds. I loved the way the bird songs answered each other and the different layers of sounds."

  • 3448: Lost in the football crowd
A recording from a bitterly cold December afternoon in 2015, as Sheffield Wednesday record a 4-1 win against Wolves in the English football Championship. In the recording we hear chants, singing, jokes, drums, sounds from the pitch and above all the warming sense of being part of a crowd of people all passionate about the spectacle in front of them. Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 3449: The ghosts of our sporting lives
Hillsborough football crowd reimagined by Cities and Memory.

As we record this in the middle of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the thought of being part of a crowd of any kind, let along a large sports crowd like this, is a far-off dream, and it's almost hard to remember how we lived like that in these days of social distancing and isolation.

This piece starts with the full football crowd, and uses sound to slowly smear and wipe them away, blurring their chants all over the soundscape like polish onto a mirror. When we've finished cleaning, though, the fans have all disappeared, and we're left with the sound of the game of football being played in an empty stadium, in front of no fans as it is at this moment.

  • 3447: Laguna Veneta
Giudecca waves in Venice reimagined by Richard Watts.

"I love the original recording so have included that with a little bit of processing to add a bit more movement. This piece kind of happened on it's own. I added a couple of different pads that answered one another. The sax and trumpet seemed to fit. The overall feeling I was trying to get was an interplaying rhythm. The drum beat is there to tie everything together."

  • 3446: The waves of Giudecca
Outside the wonderful Casa Tre Oci gallery on Giudecca in Venice, we look across the lagoon to Piazza San Marco opposite.

The waves from passing boats slosh heavily against the concrete, notably louder (obviously) than the smaller canals of the main island. As well as passing boat traffic, we also hear the bells chime for 2pm from El Paron de la Casa, the campanile of San Marco across the lagoon.

    Recorded by Cities and Memory.

  • 3445: Darn ar gyfer gitâr dau
Houston Airport aircraft landing reimagined by Mark Baker.

"The reverse thrust of the jet engine was augmented with a drone in E at the start  and then a wistful acoustic line comes from the sadness of a medical issue, wondering how the medical emergency pans out."
