  • 2926: On Chalkwell Beach
Chalkwell Beach, UK lockdown sound recorded by Georgina Clark.
"Living near a beach during lockdown has been a saviour, the footpath that runs along the front is usually quite a busy, full of dog walkers and families.
"However, during this time, it has become a place of peace and tranquillity."

  • 2925: Feeling fidgety, with trampoline
Poole lockdown sound recorded by Alex Wegman.
"We're in lockdown and have not left the house for two weeks (apart from the garden), due to some high-risk members of the family. My kids love going on their trampoline.
"All reports about queues in supermarkets might as well be referring to another planet, as we've had all food delivered and have not set foot in public for a good while. I opened my window and set up my binaural mic for a few minutes."

  • 2922: Feeding birds in our garden under lockdown
Norwich lockdown sound recorded  by Michael Ridge.
"Since lockdown started my wife and I enjoy being out in the garden much more (when the weather permits!), part of our daily routine is feeding birds meal worm early each morning.
"As traffic is now far less frequent on the road behind us, a greater number and variety of species appear to be flying in. Typically, we see the Common Blackbird, Common Wood Pigeon, Eurasian Blue Tit and Magpie. Keep safe everyone and take time to listen out for our feathered friends wherever you are."

  • 2921: An otherwise spring in Leiria
Leiria, Portugal lockdown sounds recorded by Fernando Silva.
"This is the sound of a Spring afternoon in the urban area of Leiria, Portugal, recorded on March 28th, 2020.
"Pandemic silence has spread by now. Sounds of the neighbourhood can be heard, birds, dogs and voices from nearby houses, passing cars, and the parrot living on the house across the street.
"Chirping birds remind us that Spring goes on, ignoring the stupid virus spreading into people’s throats and lungs."

  • 2924: Soundscape of a formerly busy avenue in Porto
Porto lockdown sound recorded by Bernardo Bento.
"I live in an area with a city park nearby and one of the most busy streets in Porto. All of a sudden, with almost everyone in quarantine, I noticed a big difference in the soundscape.
"In this recording all you can hear is a guy playing basketball all by himself, very few people jogging and the occasional car (probably going home from work), besides of course, the noise from the city.
"I am very proud of my city, Porto, because this recording was made at 6 p.m., which is one of the busiest hours in the day and, as you can hear, almost no one is outside. They're inside their homes, as everyone should also be."

  • 2923: Corner of 6th Avenue and 16th Street, New York City
New York lockdown sound recorded by Bill Stevens.
"Last summer I composed a sound piece, part of which included the sounds from the corner of my apartment building on 16th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City.
"As is typical in my neighborhood, there is a vast amount of noise which as a resident of New York, you tend to block out most of the time. On that particular day, as this was for a project, I felt very in tune to the sounds of my corner - the constant and continuous rush of traffic, the school next to my building at the end of the school day along with the constant depth of people rushing uptown, downtown or crosstown, as well as patrons of the neighborhood deli, coffee houses and diners.
"Today, New York City is under a Stay at Home directive. The schools have been closed city-wide. The diner can only take delivery orders or take out, no seating allowed. The coffee houses are closed and the deli is open, but not cooking meals. The first sound of my 60 second recording that I heard upon standing on the corner of 16th & 6th, was the sound of bird songs, which we tend to never hear. It was so quiet and quite amazing, beautiful.
"There comes a rush of traffic as the light changes, but that rush was maybe a handful of cars and trucks if that, returning once again to the silence of bird songs. The only time I ever heard my corner this quiet was the day after September 11th.
"On that day, there was no movement and a stunned silence as the people in my neighborhood walked in silent disbelief of what we had just witnessed. And on this date, New York finds itself once again as Ground Zero, the epicenter of the COVID-19 virus in the United States.
"I can say that as we shelter in we are concerned, certainly scared, wondering if we will ever again be in contact with the people that we live so close to on a daily basis. Will we ever feel comfortable again to go out to dinner, attend a concert or sporting event? But I can tell you this, this city does not give up, we will get through this and come out stronger and united on the other end. I also believe that we are being taught a lesson, that no country can exist on their own in isolation.
"We are a global community and it will take all of us coming together to defeat this, as it will take all of us to bring the economy back, but maybe this time an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy.
"Maybe, just maybe together we can look at protecting our planet for the common good. Is it possible to imagine that had we done these two things, this virus might not have come into being?"

  • 2920: Bees in cherry blossom
London lockdown sound recorded by David Sillito.
"Huntingdon Road, East Finchley.  I've walked along this road for 18 years.
"Last week I heard what sounded like some industrial machinery outside number 49, Huntingdon Road.  After a minute or so I realised the sound was coming from above me.
"The tree was in full blossom and alive with bees. There was no traffic - and no people, suddenly we could hear the ambient sound of spring in East Finchley. Magical."

  • 2919: Eerie distraction, Berlin
Berlin lockdown sound recorded by Benjamin Yates.
"Some sounds recorded in my apartment in Berlin, today (30 March). Like the rest of Europe, Germany is under lockdown, so movement outside is being kept to a minimum.
"The noises you can hear come from my white noise machine - a useful thing I bought a while back that I use for distraction from the noises of neighbours and construction work in my apartment building. Flicking through these presets this morning - of digitally rendered sounds of birds, frogs, waves, and various other kinds of white and pink noise - I settled on the sound of background chatter from a café.
"This white noise machine has now taken on a new quality during this time of quarantine and isolation, a kind of digital eeriness, featuring uncanny reminders of the outside world and pastimes of the near-past."
