Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 2364: Impatience
Rush hour in Kingston, Jamaica reimagined by Cities and Memory.
"What stood out from the original recording was the chaos of this busy part of Kingston - constant aggressive car horn honking and people shouting throughout the short clip. I wanted to take the elements of this chaotic, almost troubled soundscape and develop something meditative and reflective from it.
"Sections of car horns - the most impatient elements of the sound - were stretched and effected to create the bed of the reimagined piece, which we've developed into a homage to the meditative analogue sounds of pioneers like Laurie Spiegel, allowing a sound based in busy-ness and impatience to become a symbol of reflection and calm."

  • 2363: Rush hour in Kingston, Jamaica
    Recorded by DJ Afifa.
"Cross Roads is a major town centre between Half Way Tree and Downtown in Kingston Jamaica. I am standing at the bus stop at Crossroads waiting for a bus going to Half Way tree. Everyone is moving quickly, trying to beat the traffic. My attention focuses on the sound of the construction site in front of me and the conductor trying to get passengers for his bus."

  • 2359: The Dragon's Mouth (drone rework)
The Dragon's Mouth reimagined by Toni Dimitrov.
"'The Dragon's Mouth (drone rework)' is a reworked track using single recording of a rhythmic splashing tongue of water known as the Dragon's Mouth Spring, multiplied and layered one over another, slowly building one long calming drone piece."

  • 2362: The Dragon's Mouth, Yellowstone
    Recorded by National Park Service.
A rhythmic belching of steam. A splashing tongue of water. The steam vent known as the Dragon's Mouth Spring lives up to its name even when you can't see it.

  • 2361: De Ad Terra (Down to Earth)
Old Faithful reimagined by Kim V. Goldsmith.
"Having worked in radio with a public broadcaster in the days when broadcast packages with sound effects and atmos were the norm, I love working with field recordings and atmospheric sound in mixes that allow us to reimagine the spaces around us. When the opportunity arose to work with the sound of the Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, I jumped at the chance to work with a sound somewhat foreign to me but at the same time I felt connected with, as something primal and spiritual. So much of what happens below the earth is still unknown territory – a place of power and presence.
Using the Old Faithful field recording as the ‘bed’ track, I allowed it to have its dark and light moments in full, underscored with a mix of dark and eerie loops chopped, extended, stretched, panned and layered underneath. There are a couple of deep earth atmospheric tracks used as well to make the mix richer."

  • 2360: Old Faithful, Yellowstone
    Recorded by National Park Service.
Yellowstone's most famous geyser, Old Faithful. Enjoy this late-fall recording made without crowds. Headphones recommended: the rumble you hear isn't wind, it's a natural vibration caused by the eruption. Mono recording.

  • 2359: Pyrotechnic drumming
Fireworks display reimagined by Cities and Memory. Every single sound in this piece - from kick drums and hat sounds to drone pulses and atmospheric lead sounds - derives directly from a field recording of New Year's Eve fireworks in Padova, Italy.

  • 2353: Massive fireworks display, New Year's Eve
Recorded by Cities and Memory. A huge fireworks display held in Prato della Valle in Padova, Italy - the largest square in Italy, and one of the largest in Europe. It's midnight on New Year's Eve 2018, and we enjoy an extensive display of various fireworks, recorded from close up in the crowd.

  • 2352: Black Sands
Black Sand Pool reimagined by Paul Collins.
"I emphasized the rhythmic bubbling of the sands in a looping, organic beat evoking an underground rave party, inside the earth. That quintessential American instrument, the lap-steel guitar, is treated to create an organ-like sound in an ambience that is spacial and hallowed."

  • 2351: Black Sand Pool, Yellowstone
    Recorded by National Park Service.
Near Black Sand Pool, the ground shakes from the low-frequency thumps made by bubbles imploding deep down in the spring. The thumps are followed by a rush of bubbles on the surface of the pool as the gasses escape. This is a 3-D, binaural recording best heard through headphones.
