Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 2246: An eye witness account for the Metro
    Reimagined by Marg Laing.
"This piece is compiled entirely from the source material.
I used Reaper to cut and reassemble the story as I heard it.
The original recording is so beautiful that I don’t think a human hand can ever do it justice.
And so am reminded: man can not recreate the earth; we have a duty to care for it.
It is best heard with headphones."

"Hyenas calling each other into the night, set to a background of frogs and crickets, recorded right next to a small river littered with hippos, and frequented by elephants and buffalo throughout the night.
Recorded in May 2015, Dijara, close to Moremi/Okavango Delta, Botswana, roughly around midnight.

  • 2244: Cape fur seals
    Recorded by Daan Hendricks.
    "Namibia, Cape Cross, 2015
There is a great sadness to the context of the sounds that are shared below, and it is somehow fittingly expressed by their whimpers, weeps and growls, seemingly conveying both sorrow and aggression. There is a culling in place in this so-called protected reserve, resulting in thousands of deaths each year by the hands of man, using clubs as their blunt tools to butcher these animals to death.
The incredulous explanation of the Namibian government for this policy is that these seals simply are too numerous, their food consumption resulting in losses to the local fishing industries. Even if we would attempt to consider this explanation as vaguely reasonable, the severity of these damages are disputed, and provide regardless no justification as to why this specimen of a human being (www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla…ded&v=3nWfFqowjQg) is profiting from the cull."

  • 2243: Xocotitla Bird Sound
    Recorded by Fernando Gonzalez Garcia.
We can hear the song and calls of different species of birds at sunrise in the Xocotitla natural reserve, in the municipality of Paso de Ovejas, Veracruz, Mexico. This is a voluntary conservation reserve characterized by the presence of low deciduous forest and pastures. You can also hear frogs, insects and other anthropogenic sounds. June 30/2018."

  • 2242: Looping Drozdy Frogs
    Reimagined by Auguste Oldham.
"The cinematic spacious sound in the recording was what originally inspired this piece, using specific sections of the raw recording to create multiple tape loops then recomposing these looping moments over and amongst each other. This process felt like an amplification and quantization of nature."

  • 2241: Tide of air
    Reimagined by Jenny Abouav.
"For this composition i have choose to focus on the capacity of sound to translate the space in a other way.
We jump under the water and inside of this release of air, middle of this confluence that I perceive as a place of transition. It is about feeling the sensation of being submerged under and inside an element as if we were entering this air release that flows with the tide where the Peat meets the Lough in Scotland."

  • 2240: Frogs in Drozdy Park
"Drozdy forest park is a wonderful place full of small waterfalls, winding canals and rivers, ancient oak trees and pines. It is a place where lots of interesting nature sounds are concentrated on. Unfortunately, you couldn't be totally free to record what you want here because the presidential residence is located near there and of you'll draw attention you may have some problems with security. Nevertheless, I have managed to take a great late-night soundscape, sitting near beautiful swamp and enjoying the beauty of Belarussian nature.

  • 2239: Cockatoos and Murray Cod at Ulupna Island
The setting is soon after sunrise beside the Murray River in Victoria, Australia at a location called Ulupna Island in the Barmah National Park, which is the largest River Red Gum forest in the world. You can hear a variety of birds, particularly Cockatoos, as well as the creaking of a branch in the River. Near the end a fish jumps out of the water, which is thought to be a young Murray Cod. • 2238: On the coast of the Gulf of Finland
"During my first-ever trip to Saint Petersburg I had a chance to visit a small resort town Sestroretsk where the cold severe Gulf of Finland is situated on. It was in the middle of july but weather was really bad, the wind was strong and it was raining all the time.
Nevertheless, it was well worth it.
