Cities and Memory - remixing the world episodes

  • 1549: Between Two Worlds (Pendock)
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Reimagined by Rob Knight.
"It's the first piece I have worked on in Ableton/Push and that brought a complete different way of track creation for me. I loved the original recording - the organ reminding of a great big organic synth and though the original is unrecognisable at times due to it being truncated/cut up/effected/reimagined the original recording creeps through and it is the very essence of the whole piece."

  • 1548: Silo (Mezquita Mayor de Granada, re-imaginada)
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
Reimagined by Acoustic Mirror (Kamen Nedev).
"I chose this recording for two reasons. One of them is that it is not
a recording of a familiar Muslim call to prayer, but an actual
Qu'ranic recitation. The other reason is that, reflecting on the whole Sacred Spaces project, I've realised that I tend to associate
religious spaces with voice, and voice resonating and reverberating in space. This also determined my approach to re-imagining the piece - by channelling the sound through an actual echo chamber (really, in a past life, an old construction silo), and playing with the
reverberation, echoes, harmonics, feedback and occasional incidental sounds that emerged from this improvised setup."

  • 1547: Traditional Quranic recitation, Mezquita de Granada, Spain
Part of the Sacred Spaces project - find out more at http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sacredspaces
    Recorded by Rima Dadenji.
"This is the traditional Quranic recitation of a juz’ (chapter of the Quran) done in the evening each day at the mosque.
In this one they start by reciting Surah al-Rahman. https://quran.com/55 The sound is very beautiful.
The Arabic accent you are hearing throughout this recitation is Moroccan because the Shaykh/Imam is Moroccan."
